Simple and Dirt Cheap Solution To Smash And Grab Robberies

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
I learned this just last week from a fellow dealer. Makes a ton of sense and would certainly work if someone tried to smash and grab. You can learn something new everyday!!!

Take a simple Bike lock, the kind with a cable. Thread it through your valuable bags and then thread it through a part of your car (preferably in the trunk) that isn't going anywhere. If you look in your trunk there are places to do this. If you have too much stuff and can't find a place to attach it to the vehicle you could thread it through several bags. It would be much more difficult to deal with several heavy bags all tied together than if the bags were loose.

Bottom line, don't leave your car unattended..that's the fastest way to lose your valuables....this board has proven that every few months for years, but if you have to, this might prevent a loss.

Hope this helps some oneimage

Sounds like an incredibly simple solution to a common occurrence. Sure would slow them down and frustrate the efforts of any would-be thieves.

    Nice tip James.

You could also thread it under a seat if the trunk was not an option.

They can be cut, but the point is that smash and grab takes 30 seconds. Cables will add several minutes + I'm sure draw added attention. If the would be their does not have cutters, they'll work perfectly.

For $5 there's not much downside. Like I said, best not to leave the car....but if you have to well, your choice.

I agree it would help, most who are going for a smash and grab are not carrying bolt cutters. You could always go with a heavy chain also.

Great suggestion. A cable will definitely slow down a thief and they aren't as easy to cut as some would believe. Bolt cutters work fast on a chain but a braided wire cable tends to squash/flatten rather than cut. Also the average smash and grab thief usually doesn't have a heavy bolt cutter in his back pocket.

Exactly, plastic coated cable, especially when it's 3/8" + or - is impossible or nearly so to cut with bolt cutters. Even a hacksaw would take to much time.

I would want to have a small "gang box" like what is used in the construction industry bolted to the body or frame, mounted in the trunk.

the most effective item one can use is called common sense, chains and such can be beat but when one uses common sense things become crystal clear as to what not to do and what to do

also common sense helps one plan and makes sure one doesn't get into situations where crooks have the upper hand
