Charmy's 2014 PORTLAND PNNA SHOW REPORT w/lots of Pics!!

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭✭✭
I hadn’t been to the Portland PNNA show in a few years mostly due to conflicts with other shows, so I was looking forward to being back in Portland. It’s such a beautiful city with the rivers running through the middle of town and lush green hills and trees all around.

I took a morning flight to Portland on Friday morning since set up wasn’t until 3pm.

image

It was a beautiful day as we flew past the beautiful snow-capped mountains into Portland.

image

image

The Portland airport

image

I checked into the hotel, grabbed some lunch, then went to the conference center to set up my table. I was pleased to see I was given the same table I had a few years ago!

image

image

image

This is a beautiful park right across the street from the hotel/show. It was nice to see such beautiful green trees!

image

One of my customer, Mark, invited me to join he and his wife and her friend for dinner in downtown Portland. So he drove into the city to Jake’s Crawfish

image

image

image

image

image

image

Cindi Snow Ray (ANACS) joined us too

image

We chose a nice bottle of wine from the Pacific Northwest.

image

Several of us had the crab bisque, along with their delicious special parmesan crusted sole

image

image

Then of course, some of us couldn’t resist their yummy desserts!

image

The next morning (Saturday) I woke up to see that it had rained during the night. I haven’t seen the rain in many months and it was so refreshing to see wet pavement and trees for a change! These are photos taken from my room.

image

image

image

There was a nice crowd outside the door when the show opened to the public

image

image

The hardworking guys manning the registration table!

image

Soon the room was buzzing and business was brisk!

image

image

image

image

image

image

My favorite Conder token dealer was set up at he showed me several recently acquired tokens he brought back from England. I wanted them all, but had to restrain myself and bought just a couple of them, including the Middlesex 382 in this photo because it was a much later die state of one that I already had, with shattered dies and cuds all over the piece.

image

Matt Powell stopped by. In addition to selling coins, Matt also creates state of the art websites. He talked to me about upgrading/updating my website. I like my current website but know that having a more modern website is important, so I’m still considering all the pros and cons.

image

Since I would only be away from home a couple of days and didn’t have to bring my exhibit with me, I actually had room in my checked bag for a bottle of wine! So I opened up this bottle of Beach House Zinfandel, and after sharing it with a few people, it went fast!

image

Another dealer had this very cool 80% off center Indian cent, which I couldn’t resist adding to my personal collection.

image

image

After the show ended on Saturday, Cindi and I decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant.

image

image

We ran into some of the other dealers from the show. We enjoyed having some drinks together, talked about the coin business, our specialties, etc.

Steve, Dave (Type2fifty), and James (Segoja)

image

Sunday started out slow, as expected, but it did pick up a little and I made some decent sales. Then soon it was time to pack up and head to the airport and home.

When I arrived at the airport, I found out my flight was delayed about 45 minutes which wasn’t too bad. When our plane arrived, I noticed it looked like a newer model.

image

Soon the plane was taking off for home – bye- bye Portland!

image

image

Hello Southern California coast!

image

And the historic old Tustin Air Base helicopter hangers just outside the John Wayne Airport

image

And yes, busy and crowded Irvine!

image

This pretty glider hangs just above the baggage area in the airport

image

The Portland PNNA show was a successful show for me, and I really enjoyed seeing Portland again. N addition to buying lots of raw coins for my inventory, I was especially happy to pick up a couple pieces for my personal collection. I’ll definitely look forward to attending the Portland ANA next March!

So that’s about it – next up will be the Baltimore show in a few weeks. Hope to see some of you there!

Brilliant, as always! Clearly this is a smaller show than most you report upon. Which do prefer--a large, "buncha-days-show" or a "brief-in-and-out" show?

    Great report.

Although I would have liked to visit all my NW friends, I was happy I went to NYC instead.

Matt recently did my new web site. He did a great job on it.

Really like the off-center Indian. How about sharing some
pics of the other errors in your collection. I've seen several
Conder tokens but never with cuds and "shattered dies".
    Thanks for the report, Tibor

Mark, I actually like them both, I like to mix them up. I really enjoy the longer shows, and I sell more at the longer, larger shows. However, they are taxing and more expensive. Smaller regional shows are fun too because they are more personal, "casual" and less stressful, and of course less expensive, especially the ones I can drive to.

Excellent report as always. Love the pictures and the effort it takes to put these up.

Slightly off topic -- Portland looks very green even in mid October. Being near the coast, do the trees lose their leaves there? What about in San Francisco? I've always wondered about that.

I'm glad you like the Indian cent error. Here's a link to my Personal Collection that contains several errors and varieties throughout, but I'll post several of the errors here as well:

Good to see you, as usual. Only problem with your show presence is that you needed twice the space :-). I couldn't believe the amount of coins you had on your table!

Nice grouping of IHC errors. I noticed two dealers in your photos had some of their display cases set up on top of the table at an angle allowing for a more straight on/vertical view of the coins. I really like this idea and wonder why more dealers don't do this. It's better on your back, less stooping over, and I think more people can view at a given time with a more straight on view. Just my opinion.

I agree those elevated display cases are a great idea. I know a few dealers who use them.

Yes, when I drive to shows, I have 5 showcases so when I fly, I have to squeeze all my inventory into 4 cases.

REally enjoyed your report (as always). Amazing luck that that IHC was struck so far off center yet the date was captured on that little piece of metal. very cool!
