1965 SMS Jefferson

Somebody finally made another 1965 SMS Jefferson in SP67DCAM.
Pop had been stuck at 8 for years now there are 9.

EDIT: The population has gone up again in the last few months. It is now at 10.

I am looking, right now, at a trio of SMS Jeffersons (1965, 1966 and 1967) which IMO are all high grade DCAMs.

They are sitting in a Capitol style holder that is in the shape of a flag banner. The middle layer of the banner has four parts. The top part of the banner is Blue and contains holes for three half dollars. The Blue part runs horizontal to the other three parts which run vertical. The three vertical parts are Red and White. Two of the vertical parts are Red and they are on the left and right edges of the banner. The third vertical part is white and it is sandwiched between the two Red Parts. Each of the three vertical parts have four holes for a quarter, dime, nickel and cent (in descending order).

This USA Red, White and Blue flag banner can hold 15 coins, from half dollar to cent. Perfect for a run of hand picked SMS Cameo/DCAM coins.

I have used this holder as the repository for my best SMS coins for the three SMS years. On the left column are the 1965 coins. In the middle column are the 1966 coins. On the right column are the 1967 coins. All 15 coins have been cherrypicked from SMS sets that I have dug through since returning to the hobby in 1998.

The three nickels just glow and they make a very nice display of high quality SMS coins. So also do the other 12 coins.

Of course, if I submit these three nickels for grading, they probably would not even receive a CAM designation given how tough SMS grading is image

I don't have this type, not a cameo anyway. I saw one, maybe, not too long ago. The 1965 to 1967 can be tricky in what has good contrast and what not. They don't resemble a regular proof but if that's what you're looking for, be careful. The few I've collected and seen over the years eventually take on a dullish look. At first, yeah....this is it. But after awhile, upon closer study, maybe not. It's likely just as tough to find one with deep mirrors as one with frost. But on the same coin? Good luck! This coin can really play with your head.

I'm still working on photo of my 1965 in 65 dcam and 1967 in 67 dcam, but in the meantime, here is a photo of a 1966 in 66 dcam.
These are extraordinarily hard to find with great contrast.

I knew they swapped out my 1965 nickel in my last submission. They only gave mine a 67 CAM. image

That being said, I've submitted at least 3 1967 nickels that I thought would be lock DCAM's and they've denied me each time...congratulations to the guy who finally snuck one past the goalie.

Nice coin. Makes me wonder how many SMS sets I have flipped over the years without so much as looking at the coins.

How interesting it is that Cameonut has three SMS Jeffersons that grade as:

    1. 65 in 65DCAM;

    2. 66 in 66DCAM; and

    3. 67 in 67DCAM.

Did he plan things this way or is it just a random coincidence?

If the SMS series had continued past 1967 for three more years Cameonut could go for a:

    1. 68 in 68DCAM;

    2. 69 in 69DCAM; and

    3. 70 in 70DCAM.

That would be a fascinating run of coins.

the real sleeper of these sets are the lincolns...(even in cam)
"most only looked for the kennedys" in these sets
but those poor lincolns i see as having a curse of metal used adding to the plague

still no one has landed a dcam roosevelt for 1965....< wow

current dcam pops...telling a story here

    lincolns
    1965...pop of 3
    1966...pop of 1
    1967...zero

    jeffersons
    1965...pop of 34
    1966...pop of 43
    1967...pop of 102

    roosevelts
    1965...zero
    1966...pop of 2
    1967...pop of 25

    washingtons
    1965...pop of 1
    1966...pop of 3
    1967...pop of 25

    kennedys
    1965...pop of 44
    1966...pop of 65
    1967...pop of 204

just some tidbits tossed in here

amazing example there cameonut...thanks for sharing

It is interesting how the populations of SMS DCAM coins in the five denominations show that nickels have the second highest total behind the 40% silvers.

Is the nickel alloy softer or harder than the alloy for the clad dimes and quarters, and for the copper cents?

I have a 1967 SMS quarter that IMO is a lock DCAM (a photo of same was taken by Todd and posted in a thread about 4 years ago). I have some SMS nickels that I view as DCAM (but they would likely not receive the designation). I also have some SMS half dollars that I also view as possible DCAMs.

DCAM SMS cents and dimes? Fugidabouditimage

    now you see
those dimes are out there...i think most roosie peeps are just as happy with their...high end "FT"...to care about lofty designation rarity

just most only concerned themselves with the kennedies...strange as lincoln collectors surely still and have out numbered the kennedy crowd

if you even think you can pop a dcam quarter...it's a worthy gold medal event
those quarters are plagued in an issue in the field in front and back of george's portrait

nickel is a hard metal to machine and work with...magic if they pulled off gems in production mode
look at most buffalo's and full step issues through the years

so yeah the nickels are noteworthy

    those lincolns though
soft easy copper/bronze to work with...but it's patina life expectancy is worrisome...to say the least
it's just so reactive to outside chemical or gas compositions which find it's surface

i still hope to claim fame to finding just one and making it in a cam holder...it's like a challenge coin in cam
prices are strong but truly do not reflect the challenge it is

I don't really want to hijack this thread, but I'll simply say that I've never seen anything close to a dcam sms cent, nor a dime. Dcams for quarters and halves are out there but tougher to find than the nickels for 1965.

Here is a 1967 quarter in 66 dcam and a 65 Kennedy in 65 dcam. I bought both well over a decade ago. I was told I paid crazy money for them, but I think I was smart for putting these away. (And yes, there is some orange toning on the quarter - very unusual).

i find it more interesting that of the lincolns...it's only the 1967 that hasn't been captured and hog tied in a holder...STRANGE

by 1967...things were running good compared to this prized year of 1965

Congrats to the submitter on the Jefferson. The nicest 65 cent I've run across is the one below. It was a 7 cam across the street as I recall.

i really had hopes up on this...a close-out lot of sms leftovers where the halves were scavaged...it's was a $10 including shipping shot
    turns out in hand
that 65 cent is one of those "border collies"...super close....closest i've yet to finding one though...i still charge on one could say as it is a feat
to find a raw sms cent that would acquire cam even...DCAM...i'd play the lottery the day i saw a sub order post of making anything 1965 DCAM

First of all, thanks for the positive comments on the dcams I posted - I don't get a chance to post them very often. I forgot that I actually bought an sms dime in dcam 9 years ago. Had a 68 cam and "upgraded" to a 67 dcam, whether it is an upgrade has been a matter of debate. But I like contrast over technical grade. Actually, I'd call this piece a cam++ or a dcam -, it is not as solid as I would like.

Anyway, here is one of the 1967 dcam dimes - in 67 dcam.

I love SMS coins! These have got to be the most difficult to determine if they are SMS's or any other type? Even for the experienced in collecting. You have to admit, if it wasn't for the year on the coin, very hard to separate. I love 'em!image
