I would not rule out a counter stamp based on size- It is a neat coin

Nice color. It is indeed an interesting chopmark, too.

Neat coin. I have seen a few chopmarks, mostly on pillars with that same look. Appears as if this coin one saw a lot of different grubby paws.

Perhaps it was used in some table games. Perhaps in a seedy night club aka opium den, or on a trade ship. Very cool. Definitely some history there. Unfortunately we will likely never know the specific details. But I believe a book was released in 2013 or early 2014 about chopmarks and their meanings. Have you heard of this? Someone on the forum posted a link ... perhaps you can find it for sale. The chopmark should give you some clues as to which province the coin traveled.

    Thanks all...
Interesting counterstamp thought coinkat, it has that large, centrally located feel of the Geo III stamps, but I've never heard of any Asian counterstamps before...
Have to think it's just a larger than usual chop though...unless someone has any info otherwise image

The reverse is definately more crusty than the obverse, like it sat bottom down in some dank wooden drawer for ages, but the obverse is very flashy in hand...abit less
grubby than my pics suggest image

A new book titled "Chopmarked Coins -A History- was released in August at the ANA Show in Chicago. The author is Colin James Gullberg and the book is really nice.

Love that coin! I agree that does look like a counter stamp to me too!

Thank you, Crazy8s for confirming my suspicions about there being a book - and for providing the title and release info! I must get a copy for my library.
