Congrats to Great Collections for a zero sellers fee on coins over $ 1,000...with only a $10 listing fee.... GC a collector friendly House auction site
Other auction houses have only raised their fees in years past , along with ebay

No. It's always been a $10.00 listing fee, but no final value fee. If you are selling a $1,000 coin, then $10.00 (1%) is not a big deal in my opinion. You will not find that anywhere else.

seller really ends up paying the fee after the buyer builds it into his bid price. But I still think highly of Great Collections, they have always done me right as a buyer and a seller.

Governments can print currency. Only the people can print faith in it — and they’re running low on ink.

As a seller with some volume behind me, both Stacks/Bowers and Heritage offer me a better net return on my coins than GC currently does (putting aside the separate issue of reserves vs. no reserves). But, to the occasional seller without "volume" behind them, GC offers a better deal currently on coins worth over $1,000 than either of those companies. On coins under $1,000, the deals at all the places get fairly close to one another I think when one takes into account listing fees, seller fees, etc.

As for sell through rates ...

Tonight I won (2) modern coin lots (with no reserves) for a grand total of $135 including buyers premium for (2) lots that last sold on ebay for nearly $600 (one lot in the last couple days for about $300 on ebay on open bid). I would have simply wrote a check for the (2) lots at about $400 if they had been offered to me through my website. Instead, I paid $135 with the juice tonight. It is not relevant which of the three auction houses it was at. But, it does explain why MOST (and in some cases a very large percentage) of the weekly auction lots are going unsold these days at the majority of auction houses as far as I know. What used to be identified here as a "Teletrade problem" is, best I see, an epidemic now in the industry. Why?

Weak overall market or consignors who love their coins (LOL), or both?

One thing for certain, SB, Heritage and GC all do a great job trying to market consigned coins. Under the right circumstances, I would consign to all three of them, although nearly all my consignments still go to SB currently. But, the market is going to have to pick up steam I believe before a much higher percentage of the lots will be successfully "risked" at no reserves at auction.

As always, just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the feedback and comments. We have no plans to increase our fee structure, we're rewarded by an increase in business, as opposed to the need for increasing fees.

The issue of reserves from some consignors is something we are constantly monitoring, although every week there is between $100,000 and $300,000 worth of completely unreserved coins (ie. those that start at $1).

Good comments all. I have seen some very strong bids on Great Collections lately in what has been a slow market overall. Call me paranoid (and maybe I am!) but I had to wonder if Heritage wasn't buying up some of this material.

Van Halen. In no reserve auctions, anything is possible. Other coin companies (just like I did tonight) or even auction companies might be grabbing great deals as you suggest (but I would think it is less likely that other auction companies are buying things up when they are going for "strong bids"), collectors are fighting it out for neat coins or even consignors might be buying back their own coins (which I believe they have the right to do so long as they pay the buyers' fee or comply with any other rules of the auction company).
