For the clad fans: a target-toned 1966 Roosie

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought a nice album set of Roosies about 5 years ago for somewhere around $200. It was a good buy, with SMS coins, silver proofs, a 1996-W, etc., and most of the silver issues were nice BUs. One of the extra coins included was this target toned 1966. I am no clad expert, so I am going to let the clad monsters among you analyze this one. I grade it MS66 after studying it under a loupe, and I'm fairly confident it will grade 65 to 67, but no higher or lower, assuming the color is not questionable.

1) Business strike or SMS?
2) FSB or not?
3) Worth sending it in or not?

I don't actually care much about the AT vs. NT issue, so let's not focus on it. I just can't see anyone spending the time to AT a 1966 dime. If they did, I have to say their artwork was phenomenal, perhaps reminiscent of Monet or Van Gogh, but in a clad sort of way. image

Before I forget, let me say it makes a nice complement to my other '66 dime. (NGC PR65 CAC, from Mark Feld). Hijacking my own thread!

From what I can see I'd say a NT business strike MS66 FB. But the 1866 is nicer. image

    Stooge,

Your coin absolutely kills mine in terms of luster. In addition, there are a couple of little marks under a glass on mine. I'll stick with my guess of MS66 over MS65 due to the crazy color & eye appeal.

Don't knock your Dime, it has killer toning, and from one of the pix, has some nicely cut hair, which means a good strike. Doesn't look like that many contact marks either.

    Good luck on the grades.

    NT - very pretty coin.

Let me know if you want to sell it. Raw is fine. It will grade.

    ah crap

stooge is still here...figures as this sure isn't a "matty" thread

awesome roosie there...i'd really have to study for die variations as i'm sure regular versus sms exist...but it looks non sms

gorgeous i can easily see a 66 in it's future but luster is a lil muted so 65 wouldn't surprise me as luster is muted
luster always seems to get a point over like stooge's example....dripping in luster

yeah...put me in the let me know when it goes for sale or....thank you for entering me in your generous giveaway

"off to find a matty thread now"

Dang, a clad Roosie I actually like. That target-toner is sweet.

(And, as you mentioned, a cool counterpart to the 1866 dime.) imageimage

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Nice coin but what do I know, I like Dimeman's coin too. image

And Stooge's is none too shabby.

Not SMS and probably not retired SMS dies. It has all the ear marks of a hammered business strike
and probably Denver since not many nice dimes came out of Philly in those early clad years. This might
be why Denvers are more common in most grades above F.

They could give it bands to make up for a low grade on such a beautiful coin but I doubt it. Probably
not worth grading fees but it could still bring a good price for its qualities. If it has good luster (which
doesn't show in the photo) then it could grade high enough to get graded. Business strikes just don't
come much nicer and EDS is tougher still.

Your Roosie looks cool. No idea on the AT/NT front though.

I have an SP68 SMS 1966 Roosie. I bought it for $65 off eBay in 2012. It's stunning in hand and has a great rose colored tone.
