Thread for coins you would like to see added to the Cherrypickers Guide.....one day

BodinBodin Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭

I'm just sitting here thinking of if the TYPE H Washington will get more of a write-up in the next CPG. Then I started thinking about all the coins not in the CPG that should be. Rather than me list a bunch, I'll leave that to all of you. What coins would you MOST like to see listed in the future CPG?

I want to see the $1 Benjamin Harrison P DDO that I found a while back(partially selfish). I just think that no one knows about it. It's a cool single squeeze DDO all the way around the periphery of the obverse. It's very easy to see with the naked eye as it is so much more bold than a regular one. And, most importantly, it's the only known DDO of the series. .....I really have a feeling that I'm alone on this one. I do like the presidential series though.

I guess, I'm also surprised that the 1988 transitional reverse has never made it into the book. I'd like to see that.

  • 1943 DDO Washington Quarter that is not in the Cherry Pickers Guide. It's a nice doubled die, and is much nicer than the FS-102 that is already in the guide.
This Variety is close to the FS-103, but not as much doubling. In fact it was listed as an FS-103 in a Heritage auction once by mistake. And sellers on Ebay have tried to pass it off as an FS-103.

All true 2-feather Buffalo nickels should be added.

In the Lincoln series I like the 12-s rpm 1, the 28-s rpm 2, and the 56-d rpm 16. The 53-d Jefferson
    D/inv D should be included.

The Three Cent Nickel that is in my 7070 set should be added to the CPG, it is quite an obvious Repunched Date (RPD)

NGC recognizes the variety (VP-002), but not PCGS since it is not in the CPG.

  • There is a 1949 dime that looks to be an abraded die that has also been re-laped.
It appears that the Obv. and Rev. dies clashed and someone decided to take the die from service and repair it.
The coins Obv detaiing is in lower relief, and the bridge of Roosies nose has been cut away quite a bit.
The bridge of the nose now curves inward toward the eye.
If you look closely you can also see what appears to be the die retooling marks where the engraver cut the die metal away.
I will try to get some pics of my N67 red faced deep toner posted when I can.
It is a pretty cool variety coin in a rather unrepresented series.

As Chris says-the four true 2 feather dates that are not currently in there and as zas107 says-the '13-S Var 1 2F+missing initial. A few nice Buff doubled dies-1930 DDO Die #6 (this is BY FAR the strongest of the DDOs for the date-much stronger than the two already in there and actually naked eye visible); 1930-S DDO Die #1; 1931-S DDR Die #2.
  • All the Franklin Bugs Bunny and ODC clashes for all the dates!

The Cherry Pickers Guides may turn out to be "encyclopedia" editions.

I know they will add a couple to the Lincolns, but there are too many IMO. A complete registry set date of circ and proof with CPG varieties is not around 507 coins.

before stuff gets added there should probably be some group which puts in place a threshold or level of significance for a Variety. as someone once posted, every coin from a specific die pair is a Variety from that die pair only and there would be sub-variety after sub-variety till we would have the CPGEE, the CPG Encyclopedia Edition. don't get me wrong, I enjoy varieties and it is good to encourage studying coins instead of just trying to get them into Top Pop holders to make money, but the Hobby has been in VarietyHyperMania for a while now. some stuff is just too insignificant and trying to encourage its significance is ridiculous, at least to me.

OK, I've rung this bell before. 1930-P Buffalo DDO-6. naked-eye visible doubling on eyelid, brow and large feather. Many Buffalo specialists consider this at least as strong as DDO-1, which is listed in CPG.

  • I would like to see one removed. There is a 2nd 1878s DDR listed as a fs802 but there is not such a beast and the pictures they show are just different parts of the FS801 coin.

I have always liked that variety. Great coin.
Quite a few of the 1930 DDO Buff coins are way cool.

You now have a chance to make this request to Whitman. The new CoinWorld has an editorial, with a specific email address, to send your recomendations to Whitman for the 6th edition.

I am going to make a list for my series, everyone should do the same.

    Already done in my case.

  • <<I'm just sitting here thinking of if the TYPE H Washington will get more of a write-up in the next CPG>>

I hope so, but I am afraid that type B is losing its foothold there already.

I guess everyone has their "pet" varieties they think should be listed in the CPG. It's my contention that if a variety is visible at low magnification (5X or less) and isn't as common as dirt (like the product of a master die) it should have a place in the CPG.
