Why is the Pine Tree Shilling N backwards?

ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,406 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just noticed that the first N in England is backwards but the 3 other Ns on this side aren't.

Anyone know why this is the case?

that letter seems to receive retrograde treatment a lot in die preparation......have seen it on countless foreign coins as well as a Bechtler

    Good, honest, question.

Too bad about all the smart@$$ answers that don't add anything.

I, too, had never noticed it until you pointed it out and it would be interesting to know the answer....

I always thought it was done to dis the British monarchy.

    That sounds plausible.
  • If you punch an 'N' with the punch upside down, it still looks like 'N'.

I feel it may have once had some meaning too as on the 1838 New York - Am I not a Woman & Sister hard time tokens the N in UNITED is reversed and die-sinker John Gibbs made no other mistakes.

The N is also backward on 2 of Christopher Bechtler's gold dollars.

Not yet. I would chalk up the backward N's to a charming but unintentional engraving error. And one that has occurred many times through the years on a variety of different coin types, one of which we featured in an ad in 2007:
