I saw that too. I looked up his medical history but I am guessing a poor choice of varnish that yellowed, as on the white shirt. Judging from the split it has seen changes in humidity a little too much, and that will certainly upset some natural resins such as dammar or mastic etc. If painted in oil, it may have been stored in the dark - sunlight will fix that. The varnish however...if not a natural resin, or some resin that cross linked, then the solvent used to remove it might well remove the paint too. Finding the right mix of solvents that remove the varnish without removing the paint is the solution.

The eyes are looking just right though and that is why you get the creeps from it, in sculpture or any rendition of the face it is the eyes that are the hardest part.
