For that kind of money I'd much rather have one of Randall Rosenthall's amazing carved wooden money sculptures:

He appears to have hepatitis or something!
What's with those "whites" of the eyes?

I saw that too. I looked up his medical history but I am guessing a poor choice of varnish that yellowed, as on the white shirt. Judging from the split it has seen changes in humidity a little too much, and that will certainly upset some natural resins such as dammar or mastic etc. If painted in oil, it may have been stored in the dark - sunlight will fix that. The varnish however...if not a natural resin, or some resin that cross linked, then the solvent used to remove it might well remove the paint too. Finding the right mix of solvents that remove the varnish without removing the paint is the solution.

That sculpture is right on the edge of the "uncanny valley" for creepiness. If it moved, it would be squarely there. Very nice though. Best put in a museum environment.

My first thought was "creepy" followed closely by "jaundice".

Interesting piece. Happy 7,000 to you!!! image
  • Yep a bit of jaundice, it was common because of the not so good for you medical remedies or it could be lighting or or...
The eyes are looking just right though and that is why you get the creeps from it, in sculpture or any rendition of the face it is the eyes that are the hardest part.

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. • I checked for jaundice in a few medical dissertations on his health but could not substantiate it. Well, his eyes seem to have been hazel grey. It appears likely now that yellowed varnish is the culprit as this green would be the likely result. It is also making the coat and other things have a seemingly bluish cast. It is decent, but more attention to surface sheen would have made this pop a bit more. The bow tie looks leather, the eyes too glassy. His facial skin was said to be rather brown and it looks a bit too normal here. I think the left eyebrow should be arched more - it seems that is how he kept his eyelid from drooping so he could see. From what I read, many conditions attributed to him are not quite accurate. This is by the man who did the statues at Cooperstown of Ted Williams etc. This work may or may not garner 125K, but not from me. For that money I expect master craftsmanship. The yellowing could and should have been avoided, even if by practical experience alone. Some of the rendering is incongruous. I can only find limited auction results, but it seems several bring in under the 10k I suspected, and some go unsold. Certainly more for large and well known figures, but I wonder how much when not a large commission. "This will be your only chance to own a real wood sculpture from the master." - apart from the smaller piece of Williams sold at Lelands this year - with a reserve of...$1,500. The Williams signature...not so sure about.

Edit to finish a sentence left hanging.

Looks like something Macklemore found in one of his Thrift Store hunts. Wonder how much he paid for it?
