I just got interested in Hobo Nickels and from where I have found to buy them other than coin shows is eBay. Some are fairly cheap but nicer ones get big money. You should search hobo on eBay and see what they're selling for and get some idea of what might be possible. The BST is all ways a good place to start but I did a search on it and found only three posts of them for sale and that was one a year for the past three years.
Brought them to Summer Fun, fellow from Hobo Society looked at the 6 and thought they had a total retail of $1,400. But suggested joining club to use their Jan 15 auction to get best $. Owner needs funds due to no work, thats why We were looking for any dealers who handle them.
Hi Scootersdad. I just emailed you. I am sure there will be some interest in this group. I collect them, and own over 300 old ones, including the $24,200 hobo that set the record for price paid. Anyhow, please keep me in mind if you/your friend get to the point of selling. I am the "end user" for a lot of dealers. I don't check the boards here often, so email is best. Thanks a bunch!
Sounds to me like you should follow up with TwoSides' exciting and somewhat cryptic post. Big game hunter usually means big premiums.
I don't know any of these folks personally so I'm not bias.
But waiting six months until January club meeting sounds like NOT a good idea to me. Especially if your friend needs the cash now. That's a long time to wait.
I don't see anything wrong with posting on the BST immediately, and responding to your PMs, and considering all the offers on the table simultaneously. Then take the best offer and tell everyone else "sorry this item is no longer available."

He's a "big game hunter" in the numismatic sense.
