Toned Morgan market alive? Maybe so...

Watched this one on GC and got blown way out of the water. Looks like a very nice coin, I'll bet the buyer will be happy with it.

Also, I will never buy a toned coin in a rattler because I've played around enough with AT'ing coins (to learn what AT coins look like) to know that any coin in an old rattler slab (not airtight) can be AT'd.
I'm not bashing this coin -- all good...art is art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so all I can say is God bless the person who bought that -- wow!
PS. And I'm kidding...I really hope that no liquor was involved because that would really be sad

nope tHat coin could have gone for even more. as stated above it has textile toning, the colors are good and it is in an OGH. I would however have that one put in the new holders to keep it stable and make the toning slowdown to non existent. That coin is fantastic and has all the proper attributes for NT such as pull away and much more.
And there's never a guarantee you'd get the gold. Technically I'd grade it a mid range MS66 (66.3 to 65.5). The color is a different issue.
In any case for my $4800+ I'd be more comfortable with a killer MS68 Morgan less the monster color.....or possibly 25 white MS65 rattlers.
The buyer may he happy to have purchased this Morgan. But I would think the seller is extremely happy.

I can think of a lot of nice 19th century silver that I'd rather have for $4800+ than the coin in question - purely from an investment standpoint. JMO.
Wow

<< <i>There must have been a lot of liquor involved during that bidding as all toning eventually ends at black. It might take time, but it will get there... >>
Like how long? 10 years? Or 10,000? And if the latter, why should anyone care? Seems to me the toning agent (the bag) is gone, and if properly stored, any further toning will slow to such a pace as to make this point utterly meaningless.

<< <i>Heckuva price for a net MS66 toner. In a current 66 holder wouldn't that fetch around $1000-$2000? The GC venue did a lot to help this go high. Here's a coin where a green sticker would kill it.

That's a very practical and conservative alternative on how to spend $5k, rr, but most toner collectors simply don't fit that mindset. I'd be bored in 2 minutes going through 25 nearly identical MS65 white rattlers. On the other hand, I imagine I could behold this toner for many many hours over many many years. To each their own, of course.

I am a fan of the green and purple blend myself... Man did this coin hit the mark for me. And no, I was not the winning bidder.
Green is a great color. The most desirable green is 3rd cycle emerald green ("R" on the chart) which is very distinctive and beautiful. On some great rainbow toners like this one, you can also find 4th cycle forest green ("V" on the chart), which is considerably darker than emerald green. There is also green in the 2nd cycle, but it normally appears as a pale light pastel mint green ("H" on the chart).
Note that if you try to download the Sunnywood Color Chart off Google, some of the colors may appear differently or incorrectly depending on your monitor. For example, on my current monitor, when I pull up the color chart, the pale mint green "H" is appearing as white on the chart. I'm not good enough with computers, display adapters, color processing etc to know how to finesse that problem.
Anyway, here is the subject Morgan with color mapping. Interestingly, the lowest toning level is "J" sunset yellow, visible in the protected areas inside the loops if the 8's in the date. Also there is "pullaway" effect on some stars and numerals, as expected, where there is little to no toning.
You can easily see the difference between the beautiful emerald green "R" on the lower half of the coin, as vs. the deeper forest green "V" at PLURIBUS UNUM. The forest green will generally come surrounded by deep blues, deep magenta (purple) and violet.
Toners are like snowflakes - no two alike, but all following the same rules, with the same continuous progression of colors. Understanding the colors makes looking at them so much more interesting !!!

My thoughts exactly.

Well, just Love coins, period.
Even among 25 common MS65 Morgans you can find plenty of variety to hold one's interest and pay little premium in the process. And no one says you have to buy blast white either. You can find various coins with levels of color that won't cost you a cent more. Variations in strike, luster, marks, PL surfaces, VAMs, even different dates. A date set of 25 MS 65 rattlers would be cool. I've owned toners in the past too. But, I didn't spend any additional time admiring those coins (ie pretty much all of them were in the SDB). I've got a very nice MS67 1887 Morgan with only a 5% crescent of bag-toning on the obverse edge. Even at 95% blast white I've looked at that coin numerous times in admiration. I can look at the billowy and puffy cheek luster on that coin and never get bored. Different seats for different folks.
