though I, of course, don't know for certain I would think it isn't AT at all. the pictures show it to be a little darker than it really is and the luster is OK. it was mixed in with other loose coins in a container and had been stored for many years like that according to the best information the seller could give us. she is clearing out her Aunt's home to settle an estate and has been bringing things in periodically as they are found in the home(I think she is living there and in no hurry). also in the stuff she brought in with this coin were 11 BU Red/Red brown IHC's all dates 1901. they were also loose in a bag with an assortment of circulated coins like Wheat Cents, Two-Centers and Lib Nickels. we are going on the hunch that maybe there was a roll and the rest of the coins haven't been found yet.
There appear to be several scratches on the neck, just below the neck and in the field behind the head. There is also the issue of the black spot on the reverse. I don't know if the toning is original or not.
I would not have paid AU money for it and probably would have passed on it. Yes, I am getting very picky when it comes to coins I would consider for purchase.
I like it. I think it spent time in an old album before being "improperly stored" for a while. Acetone might take off the stuff on the rev if it is just adherent gunk. Interesting story.
I took the picture through the holder I bought it in which may account for the color and I also considered, as kaz pointed out, that rinsing it in acetone would be a good thing. that isn't so much to improve the appearance of the coin but to remove any contaminants which may still be on it from the poor storage. a coin stored long term(as this will be) in a more stable environment won't help if there is stuff already on the coin. after it's removed from the holder and rinsed I will endeavor to take better additional pictures.

it's a nice looking coin. Doesn't look AT to me.

<< <i>I like it, but the photography makes me consider the toning(AT v. NT). >>
My thoughts exactly. I question the photos more than the toning, though. I suspect this coin is quite nice in hand.
It has the second reverse for that year.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
But would prefer it a bit lighter.
But, it is what it is

nice coin ... I love Barber quarters ... and a nicely toned AU is always great!
(I hope it didn't look like I was being a **** when I posted the other "incredible" Barber quarter thread!
I hadn't seen your thread ... )
