New book about Chopmarked coins

The most recent issue of Coin World on pg. 36 has an announcement
about a new book concerning Chopmarked coins. This reference is
written by Colin Gulberg. I think this will be a good read and reference.

I hope it covers the period during which coins with chops were being returned as non gradable.

I am looking forward to receiving my copy. I know that Colin has been working on it for a long time. It should become the definitive update of Frank Rose's original book on chopmarks.

This will probably be an excellent addition to serious numismatic libraries. I have to wonder, though, if there is really enough demand to support publication of such a book.

Is there much collecting interest in chopmarked coins in asia?

As I've heard it, the pre-order demand has been quite strong. The Chopmark Collectors Club has a membership of around 250 and is steadily growing. This is a club that was basically dormant until a couple years ago when Colin revived it. Sure the field isn't like Morgan dollars but there is a small but strong following which I'd say are more represented outside of Asia than within. Some really interesting and smart people in the club, check it out if you have any interest in historical trade involving silver coins.

I would say it is only a matter of time before Asian collectors take notice of the local history contained.

I still find it intriguing that they dislike chops so strongly. Point being that world coins with chops are severely discounted in price.

We all would love if our coins could talk, chopmarks tell a story and hopefully the book will facilitate that.

I wonder if he was able to identify many of the regions from where the chop marks originated? I understand they were similar in function to mint marks identifying the coin's travels. Should be a fascinating read if you have coins in hand to compare with images.

I have never seen a 75p I am convinced wasn't a S coin under the chops. I did make a legit 75p PCGS chop mark VF 30 for another member in the LSCC but I personally don't think the chop is Asian in origin.
