Why don't Large Cents Rainbow Tone like Indian and Lincoln cents do?

I've seen absolutely stunningly toned Lincoln cents (some featured in a front page thread running right now…) and also some neat/attractive Indian cents with beautiful pastels and luster.

Why doesn't this happen with Large Cents?

Large Cent Proofs do sometimes tone in fantastic shades. Large Cent business strikes sometimes tone a deep green. These are known as "greenies" to the EAC community and are avidly sought.

Would love to see a greenie!
As for the lack of toning, maybe the metal composition of the large cent planchets?

The coin docs were not nearly as good that long ago.

Could have to do with the metal composition. I agree with what BigMoose said as I have also seen some beautifully toned large cents turn a stunning shade of green. That's my guess though, there could be other factors involved.

Wheats = Metal Composition: 95% Copper - 5% Tin and Zinc

Large Cents = Metal Composition: ~100% Copper

Here was one I handled earlier this year... a gorgeously toned gem. NGC Fatty 65 CAC. My photos were conservative with the color.
While it doesn't have a lot of toning, this is one of the nicest LC I can recall seeing with color like this.

I have an 1819 in an NGC holder with color and frost on the reverse similar to the coin valenti151 posted, but no photo of it.

In the meantime, I do have this one:

Actually, it seems like BigMoose is calling your dad a toned large cent, GreenieJr.

  • Probably because they used a much different purity of copper with the early cents as opposed to more modern cents.
