Dose anyone hear own a 1879 s second reverse morgan?

I inherited a 1897s second reverse several years ago and I'm trying to gain a little knowledge on these scarce coins .I would like to see some pics for comparison if you own one. Thanks.

Here's a link to over 700 of them that have sold in Heritage auctions:

By "second reverse", I assume you mean it has the reverse of 1878 (all arrow feathers parallel) rather than the reverse of 1879 (top arrow feather slanted). I don't have a picture handy, but the reverse looks just like it did for 1878-S. One of the reverse dies was actually used with 1878-dated obverses as well.

In general, the issue isn't a date scarcity or rarity from G to MS63. It does merit regard as a condition rarity in MS-65 or higher though, and there some die varieties of the issue that VAM specialists have identified as rare in almost any condition.

  • I have read that it is believed that as many as 500,000 where minted in early 1879.I know nothing about grading but per the red book I would go AU 50.What I would like to know is it be worth while to send for grade based on the number minted ot just sit on it?

No, it is not worth getting graded. Here is an AU that I just recently sold on ebay:

There is a nice book by author David Wang (who used to hang around on these boards) around 2001 about the 1879-s, Rev. of 1878-s Morgans. He identified the VAM varieties for the year exhaustively, and did a thorough rarity analysis of each. Looks like AU&AG's coin and blue 62vette's coins have a fully formed, non-broken "r" in Trust," which is the first identifying feature in the variety identification roadmap. Anyone here actually own David's book?

My comment about this issue is that it doesn't come as nice as "normal" 1879-s Morgans. The Rev. '78-s coins are heavily covered with contact marks most of the time. Finding a legit MS65 coin is a real challenge.

This one is not the norm for the rev of 78, bought this at the ANA last year.

  • The1879s reverse of 1878 or second reverse has parallel feathers on the top arrow.
The 1879s has a slightly angled feather on the top arrow.Known as 3rd reverse.

    S mint coins only.
