This is actually a two-part article. This one deals with the money changes from the discovery of gold in California up to the 1855. I showed how different the money was in the south, west and northeast. How local paper money had become widespread in the East, gold in the West with foreign coins still the prominent coin in circulation in the East.
The second part will cover the panic of 1857 and how it caused distrust of paper money. It will also cover the exchange of copper and foreign silver, and the issuance of the copper-nickel cent in 1856.
