Morgan Dollar: Guess the grade, how did it tone this way, Grade revealed post #30

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,968 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is a....lets call it unique....1884-O Morgan Dollar. Feel free to give me thoughts on grade but I was really curious on how it tones this way. I have my thought but I am no toning expert. You can also share your opinions on the coin, can't hurt my feelings on this one. I know this thivck toning is very hard for a guess the grade but you can throw something if you want.

Here are 2 sort of glam shots, but not really a glam coin:

Sprayed with an extremely fine mist of house water. Chemicals in the water, chlorine, fluoride, etc are
enough to make that kind of pattern.
I have a 1883 Morgan with a similar, but not so nice, a pattern. I used that dollar for learning how to
do a specific gravity test, in and out of the water over several days. Now we have that pattern developing
in kind. I can only assume that the impurities in the water made the pattern.

My wag as follows, Appears to have been in some sort of holder/album as the rim is toned heavier. The mottling could be from having been stored in an environment (temperature and humidity) that changed. The mottling appears to be spotted by moisture, that in turn dried in place. Maybe an old Raymond Wayte in a high humidity environment? (house flood, non air conditioned garage)

    I would say MS-66. Possibly Proof-Like?

Todd - I love the look of that Morgan myself - I agree with both Bochiman and Bolivar's theories - both seem very plausible .. My first thought was as Walkerguy said - leather pouch type of storage

As for the grade, I would speculate 64 maybe 65 - obviously a lot of that is dependent upon the luster and how muted it is

I had an 1892-O Barber Half you photoed 2 years ago with a similar toning pattern: 1892-O Half PC-58 BluCC Photo

Other photos showing the pattern a little more clearly IMO:

    65PL, but, um... yeah.

As for how it toned, no expert here, either, but it appears to have been in an album. The mottliness (?) probably has less to do with the album than with where it was before the album, which prepared the surfaces (poorly) to receive the toning from the album.

I think that coin is a 66. not PL, but nicely contrasted. I think a possibility on the toning would be not rinsing properly after a dip in EZEST or something similar...

once it wasn't rinsed properly, it was put in an album, or some other environment for it to tone like that.. maybe old envelope.

Gotta think that was caused by humidity. The coin is MS 65 IMO.

Not my cup of tea. Speaking of tea, they spilled some hot tea on it and let it dry there.

Shame about the slightly negative eye appeal toning. Looks like an amazing coin under there.

I also see a high technical grade and seemingly good strike for an O mint? Not familiar with Morgans but O mints often seemed weakly struck when I sought them, I like the hair over the ear. I like it. There is some reflectivity?Agree with the mentioned cause for the mottling. A little more color on the rims than showing here? The mottled effect is so evenly dispersed I don't see it as a problem at all, but then I prefer toned coins.

    65PL.
Not a look I care for.
Long of time spent in a manilla envelope?
    When in doubt, don't.

Uncirculated Details-Environmental damage. No way should either major TPG give this coin an MS #.Coin surfaces were exposed to a mist with chemicals in it.That's artificial toning, isn't it?

Okay,so what MS grade that the coin doesn't deserve did the TPG give the coin?

MS 64 , has cameo effect on devices. Sat in a Whitman Folder for years in an attic in a humid environment.

That'd be my suspicions of the coin based on the toning in the periphery as well as the splotchiness (mottled, if we must) , etc., that I'm seeing.
Common date, no big deal. Worse things happen. It's a natural… my guess.

A man stopped by to find out the approximate value of some coins his dad left him.
I asked permission to photo the obverse and reverse, as well as the leather pouch
where the coin has been for a long time.

Every environment is different. Another day at the shop. Not that I disagree that the OP's coin wasn't in leather. Coins react in unstable places in a variety of ways.

…so the 80s took a break from the leather pouch and was stored in PVC sometime in the 1970's and then put back into the leather pouch??? Isn't that green slime PVC damage???

Interesting cameo creeping out from underneath the strange toning pattern.

I am curious to see how PCGS views it.

    MS65?

The coin is graded PCGS 64PL.

My first thought was leather, was just curious for other thoughts and opinions, thanks for all the input!

Yes PVC damage- also look like some harshly cleaned it by all the hairlines. This is probably what happened to the toning.
