What in the world is going on with my eBay auction? (1934 Lincoln)

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is my auction. This is a $50 +/- coin, but it has been bid up to over $100 with 57 bids. Three different bidders have pushed this up $2 at a time. Coinfacts lists a DDO, but this is not it. It almost looks like shill bidding, but I sure don't know these bidders. Any thoughts?

Is the strike a little off center? In your pic it looks like the L in Liberty is almost missing. It looks like it's partially showing on the rim and that the rim looks wider there somehow.

You're right, checking my CPG, it doesn't look like the DD to my eye.

The L is all there. The coin does have a "thick" rim all the way around.

Hard to say, could be that one or two of those bidders thinks this is an upgrade. You photos are decent and I could see an outside chance of it going to a +, but at the current price it would be fully priced at the + level. Or it could be that three collectors are really hungry for a nice 34.

I'm not an expert but could it possibly be a proof and just mis-labeled?

My guess is that the buyer thinks it has an upgrade shot at 67. The coin is superb and the collector that has a full red short set might step up for the right coin for his/her set.

I considered that, except no proofs were struck in 1934.

Nice dark orange… Could be upgradeable and/or someone just needs THAT look. Some of us are known to "step up" for coins that meet particular criterion. Just speculating here and make no excuses for another's ignorance, or genius…. but it's a nice looking coin from what I see.
  • I'd say they're hoping it will upgrade, or at least cross to PCGS ... and the older holder proves the color is stable.
Let's try not to get upset.
  • Great looking, strong strike, stable, all reasons but it is getting tight for an upgrade. CAC?
  • I was just looking at the images in coinfacts and and I would say your pic makes the coin look as good as a 67 if not better. I would have went for this one if it was just a bit lower say 90.00

I have paid stupid money for certain coins that don't come up often that I really need. All it takes is 2 people who both want it. Congrats on being the seller! Oh and this is why serious bidders don't play their hand until the end and snipe.

Does not appear to be a DDO either- so my guess is that its just a good ole tinkling contest.

I don't like when bidder way overpays. The likelihood of a return is great when the bidder realizes they paid way too much for a relatively common coin.

judging by the cert # this is one of the first 300K coins ngc graded, MAKING THAT roughly 25 years ago....

Since the grading paradigm is dynamic, yesterday's 67 could be today's 67+ CAC, or 67* CAC, OR WHO KNOWS, A 68?

either way is is a blazer!

Whatever happened to the paradigm that with the advent of the TPG,a coin's grade can be determined with great precision and accuracy, precision and accuracy that was previously unheard of?

mr1874 believes that TPG putting a dollar amount range on the coin would be far more useful than picking a concrete number like 63 or 68,for example.Uncirculated coins would be basal uncirculated, choice uncirculated,or gem uncirculated but TPG giving us the correct range of how much the individual coin should fetch from an earnest buyer is a way better approach to "the grading problem," in my opinion.

The label on my 1884-O dollar would simply say "Choice Uncirculated." The label on my 1882-O dollar would say "Choice Uncirculated" as well even though it is clearly a nicer coin than my '84-O. Imagine a world where basal, choice and gem are the only three words used to describe the state of an uncirculated coin.

Would this when Choice was 65 and Gem was 67 only? Would we get Select 63 back?

Here's the conversion chart for the TPG's when the numbers go out of style and we return to words only to describe an uncirculated coin's state of preservation:

    basal unc.-60,61
    select unc.-62
    choice unc.-63
    select choice unc.-64
    gem unc.-65,66
    superb gem unc.-67,68,69,70

Hey, it's an especially nice coin. I love the color. Considering the price jump for a 67, is it really so unreasonable to expect a PQ bid?

Maybe they love the awesome blooming red color and the fact that it's stable in that older holder.
    It deserves some premium. image

I'd consider yourself fortunate and call it a day. If I sold the same coin it could have sold for $13 and change....congrats.
