So is Heritage live too fast or too slow?

amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was playing...bidding on Heritage tonight.

The slow is I had an earlier bid...watched it close...and after the next lot was well underway...the dreaded BRRRAAAAAANNGGGG....you have been outbid!

On the other side...I was waiting to pounce on a coin....poised ta bid.... before I can bid....I'm talking milliseconds the bid increment has jumped 5 times! So did someone pay way more than they wanted to? I'm curious because I would have been very upset if my bid had been the winner!

Pay the 5% and put a person in the room. I just do not trust these computer things even though I use them occasionally.

Those times when the "bid increment jumped 5 times" are probably due to live proxy bids rather than live bids. In the time between internet bidding ending, and live bidding starting, you can enter proxy bids...which are pretty much exactly like internet bids, but don't get applied until things go "live".

    Weird, really....

How good is your Internet connection? I find their application to be quite responsive and have no complaints.

I have bid in real time on the computer with the red 'cut bid' and 'bid' buttons, successfully, but it is dangerous at best, as I have heard some real horror stories. Internet bidding or HA live by proxy are safer IMHO. There is also phone, fax, mail or email. HA offers more ways to bid than any other IMHO.

I should have said is the bid button dangerous! image When several people are actively bidding it is very easy for the bid you are about to place to be 3 or 4 increments higher than you intended. That is what almost happened to me. How many have thought they were bidding say $500 only to find out the bids had gone up so fast they bid $700?

    Darrell,

At first I had the impression you were bidding on the Internet Only auction.
I agree, it can go quickly, and you must be on your toes. Waiting till the last
second to place your bid (or Cut Bid, as the case may be ) is only inviting
trouble. A few years back, I waited a millisecond too long to bid on a nice
1898-S Barber Dime, I hit the bid button, but by the time my bid registered,
they were on the next lot, and I was the winner of a nice 1899 Dime in lower
mint state. ( It took me about a week to sell it, as I already had that date in
65 ) . I did not call Heritage about my error. All it would have done was possibly
jeopardize my standing with them. Easier to pay and sell it.

Lots of nice coins on the Heritage auction - the one that I loved and wished it were
in a lower MS grade, was the 1914-S Quarter in NGC 65. What a wonderful coin. It's just
too nice to slide into my AU 53-MS 63 set.

Bidding live cost me an unexpected 3 or 4 bid increments once. I don't do that no more...

Figure out a bid, enter it well in advance, and let it play out. Keeps me from being an auction-fever bidiot too.

I'm new to bidding on HA. So how long does the live bidding go on after the internet bidding ends? Can you still watch what your bidding on during the live bidding so you know if you get outbid?

The Heritage internet bidding is the live portion of the auction. The bidding supposedly continues until the bidding stops but I have seen a few cut off to quick IMO. You can watch your lots and if you do not intend to bid you should disable the bidding feature so you don't inadvertently place a bid!

    Mike

It was the internet only auction. I do enjoy it and have found if I place bids early someone always seems to bump me off! It can be risky...remember that quarter I bought by mistake! image
