What is the hottest coin or series right now?

Is there a modern or classic coin (or series) that dominates the numismatic scene today?

Agree with this. And prices/interest seems to be creeping down into the 55 and 53 grades as well. I recall a few years back that the jump in price from 55 to 58 seemed totally illogical. The market has been working on "fixing" that.....and NOT by dropping the 58 prices!!

It's usually the one your're trying to find a good example of.

I would add Seated halves in the magic grade: PQ AU58+. I wanted to buy these up quickly about 5 years ago when the Bust halves had already gone nuclear in AU58+ grade. However, they're so scarce that there weren't any to buy except the commonest dates in dipped out, so-called AU58. As we all know from the Bust half run-up, those don't count and don't bring any premium whatsoever. So I ended up submitting a lot of raw AU's and making some nice AU55-58 coins instead. Now on to PQ AU 58+ Barber halves.... Oh wait, those have already vanished long ago.

    A Classic for sure.

But try looking for Baseball Hall of Fame Clad Halves in MS / PF 70 . Some sellers want over $2000.00.

    Definitely draped bust half dimes.

all we hear about in thread after thread is, what will be the mintage limit and per-person and household limit on the new gold half dimes, what will the labels say, what will the flippers make on them, how many MS70 and PF 70 draped bust half dimes will be made, post your order number for your new half dimes.. on and on about the draped bust half dimes...

We went hot and heavy for years with the pop top super-grades. Then the need to fill a void in the top of the circ ranges for the "Everyman" set. Of course, now "Everyone" can hardly afford these coins as they often cost as much
or more than MS63's. So much for "Everyman." And this week I discovered that even the "low man" has not been left out of the Registry mania with PO-01/low ball sets. And these examples can run you the price of F-VF coins. So the next obvious hole to fill are the guys that collect Good-VF coins. How can we bring them into the Registry forefront and turn their coins white hot "nucler" and run the prices up for them? image

The easiest way I know to create PCGS AU58+ coins is finding MS61 slabbed coins that are really AU58's. Whether you get the + or not is the hard part.

Hottest coin series? I think it's still the mega-super pop top PCGS-CAC monsters from big collections like Newman, Gardner, etc. How can you get hotter than that?

You can always try rare date seated quarters in AU-58+ but there aren't probably more than a dozen or half-dozen in existence if you consider ALL dates from 1838-1891.

In terms of addition to the collector base it has to be Trade dollars! The collector pool has gone up 400% from 1 to 5. A quantum leap in desirability I say.

Nice large cents have gotten difficult to find, and the prices are quite strong.
