I'm busy putting together a Type Set for a customer starting in the mid-1800s, major design Types only, and I was wondering how it is that all three denominations of Barber coinage managed to make it through their lifetimes with no major design modifications. How did that happen??

Charles Edward Barber (November 16, 1840 – February 18, 1917) was the sixth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1879 until his death in 1917.

It really wasn't that long of a run. 1892 to 1916 is only 25 years. And the was a slight design change on the reverse of the quarter.

There was a very major design change in 1916 when the mint eliminated Barber's design completely.image

Only a 25 year time period so not that long.

Went longer than that on other series.

Speculating that in the "old days", some things weren't so susceptible to "change".

My guess would be that he did it right the first time.
