Help with ID of Isaac Wood token please.

I purchased a nice token collection in Maine prior to the Baltimore show. In that collection was the 1876 Centennial medal (HK20) sold to Len Augsburger at Baltimore and discussed in the July E-Gobrecht. The token collection included civil war tokens, hard time tokens and a few store cards. Included in the lot was the following brass piece that is not easily identified. The piece is obviously uncirculated with proof fields and highly reflective. The 2x2 holder states an Isaac Wood Token. A quick Google search indicates that Isaac Wood was ANS librarian (1869-1880). The token is dated 1877 with General U.S. Grant on obverse and "A Civic Grant for Alabama Claims" on the reverse. Alabama Claims involved the United States claims brought against the British government for aiding the Confederacy by building and selling warships; the most famous being the Alabama. Information about this piece would be appreciated or guidance to a reference book that might catalog the piece.

Many thanks....

There's 2 types both struck by George Hampton Lovett for Issac Wood on 21mm diameter copper and brass planchets.

They are satirical tokens which have portions of Grant's public speeches on the reverse and are one of the more common Wood's creations.

The “Civis Londiniensis” is a NY-395 and the "Civis Edinburgensis” is a NY-395A.

    Thanks for the information.

Could I bother for the full title to Miller book as wish to locate a copy? The history behind these tokens is too interesting to ignore.

Will be adding a token price list to my dealer website and definitely need a strong reference to estimate value. The Maine lot has many high grade tokens.

I found it via Google: A CATALOG of US STORE CARDS or MERCHANTS TOKENS, Miller.

Looks like a fair number of books are required to work with Exonumia items! Will need more library shelf space.

    Thanks

Actually a Russell Rulau number assigned to the token not Donald Miller or Edgar Adams.

Finding a 1300 page 2004 4th Edition of the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 by Russell Rulau is your best buy as a single reference guide.

You'll have to do your own research as to pricing as exonumia has been on fire and some of Rulau Unc priced tokens listed for $50.00 in 2004 are selling as high as $6K today.
