So I'm working out of town and just sittin in my hotel room. I get to looking on the bay and I ran across this Morgan. I though it might be about MS62 with end of roll toning. Did I get screwed?

Nice reverse color that is NT.

    I think that it's an AU58.

Well if its closer to AU58, its still valued around $40 and I paid $9 for the toning. Lol

I would not call it end of roll toning and I see it as mid AU. Overall not worth the price imo but its your call.

It does not look right to me but it may be my monitor, looks like you can send it back if you do not approve. I am a big fan of the 2 minute bidding. I got carried away on the live bidding at Heritage last week and did not stop until I quickly added up how much money I spent in 30 minutes.

Yes sir, 14 day return. I've never had to return anything but the description does state BU. Hopefully it has a little more luster in-hand. It wasn't a big dollar coin and I have seen worn one's going for around $35-40 so I don't expect an MS65 coin. If it pleases my eye enough just to throw in with my other old morgans, I'll be happy.

I like the toning. I am not a big fan of the hits on the check. It will be interesting to read your opinion when you have the coin in hand.

It is funny that you managed to spend money sitting in a hotel room! Thankfully I've never been a hotel room when an item I wanted came up for auction. But I have managed to spend money sitting in my armchair circa midnight.

Reverse toning looks like it is the tilt it to the light variety.

$35-40 is probably about right, but hard to get beat too bad on a $50 Morgan.

Yea the hits on the cheek is what brought what I thought it was to a low MS. I zoomed the pics in and seen some nice details in the eagle and cottonballs, etc... and thought it looked at least MS. I may be wrong, I'll know when its in-hand. Btw, there ain't much to do sittin in a motel room for a week! Lol

    Antique Show this weekend.
And today comes a fellow with a 2 coin-2 pen desk set. Looks like a nice 1884 Morgan on the left side, sealed under plexiglass, and the right coin, an O mint Morgan ( suspecting another '84) . I cannot see the flip sides. I told the man I guessed they were the same year and possibly 2 mint state coins inserted into this fine office accessory. Would post photos , but do not want to share too much information for fear of "hijacking" or "high jerking".
So I'll just add that I think you did okay. You know how most guys are , given 2 minutes.
You know they're probably already snoring.

End of roll would basically be on one side but with geometrical lines showing the paper folds. Or where the top of the roll was crimped. Not sure I explained it properly but I tried. I don't have one these days to show you.

Another end roll for comparison. Look for the straight line caused by the edge of the paper.

I would not say you got screwed, you got a 90 percent silver coin. 49 bucks at lunch or a little gas seems worse to me than owning a morgan silver dollar. We go thru about 800 bucks a week on groceries, gas, going out. I would rather eat beanie weenies and buy 50 face of 90 percent a week but being single does not really appeal to me.

I do not even ask how much the cell phones, internet and satellite tv cost me a month anymore cause that does put in a foul mood.

Back to the 2 minute ebay bidding, I can really get into that. The thrill of victory......reguardless of final cost...for a fleeting moment you are the winner until reality sets in.image I decided to 2 weeks ago to not buy any coins or guns for a few weeks, I did great for 13 days, on the 14th day I bought a ruger mk 1 new in box from 1972 and a FNH FNS 40 cal and then arrived back home and logged onto heritage live arms auction and sat in silence for 20 minutes before hitting the bid button for a nambu, 2 sets of derringers, hk usp 40, Hartford arms .22. Day 15 brought a S&W mint 36 revolver and a colt woodsman in 98%. I recovered for a few days in time to buy some silver and gold after it starting up again.

3 am and I am bored no good auctions to bid on at the moment.

Yep, very true. And, it is usually the same group of people. Those people often have nothing else better to do.

On to the coin in question...Definitely not end of roll toning, but overall a good looking coin. And, it is difficult to tell from the picture whether it will grade AU58 or MS62 (or lower). If you can take a better picture when you get it, that might give a different story.

Well in all, I now remember what EOR toning looks like. Thanks guys! I haven't bought anything in a while and this had 2 mins left with no bids, and I was just scrolling thru the current auctions that were ending soon. I very seldom buy something that I cross my fingers hoping its good, but I did like the color, some of the details it had, and just hoping it has some luster to it. For the going price of most of these low end dates, I don't really think " I got screwed", maybe not quite worth the $49, but I think will be ok for the price. I appreciate ya'lls opinions guys!!

    Here are my thoughts:

For $49 it is hard to get beat up too bad. The toning looks really nice to me, even in the images. The color likely looks even better in hand. My only concern would be whether or not the coin was MS. If I thought that it was (after inspecting it)----I'd keep it but, if not, I probably wouldn't. JMO.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

From the pictures - with all of the "grading from pictures is tough" caveats - it looks like a slight bit of rub above the ear, with hints of rub on the eagle's breast. AU 55 or 58 IMHO.

That said, it is an 81-O which is not a super-easy O mint date. That is a plus.

Colors look good and are a nice bonus.

Bottom line: For fifty bucks, it looks nice to me.

PS: IMHO, posting a thread on this forum asking how you did on a coin is very appropriate and certainly does not qualify as a 'second grade question'.

Just ignore the rude posters here.

I do wish the moderators would ban them, but I also understand that monitoring this forum takes time and effort and that there is no cost benefit for our hosts for expending these resources.

So we are left stuck with these trolls and have to ignore them - even though I didn't in this case!!

Guilty, your honor - but in my defense, the comment was truly off-base/asinine.

Looks like a lock to grade Unc to me. 62-63. Sometime hard to tell from pics but I don't see any rub and the reverse is 63-64. Also, it's obvious there is a nice layer of original skin on both sides.

Thanks ya'll for your opinions. I still think it looks 62 to me. I know it has some rim nics but with the details this coin has, I'm thinking these may be bag marks as with whats on the cheek also. It has some nice luster also. I honestly don't think I got hurt for $49. The toning is a bonus also. Thanks again for ya'lls opinions and time!
