1795 A/E half- O.113a

An interesting progression of this scarce pre-turb half.
This is the A/E half, with a die lump near the date. It first hit the market in 1997 at the Eliasberg sale, bringing 62,500. Graded 63(raw) in the sale,
it became an NGC 64 shortly thereafter. I bought it from US Coins in about 2000, paying 53,500.
It was a partial trade when I bought the 1794 half in 61 from Sil Digenova.(2002)
All the following prices are from auction records, except the last one.
Mar. 05-86,250
May 05- 58,650
Aug. 06-103,500
Feb.08-126,500
May 09-86250
Listed for sale-US Coins-Apr. 14-185,000
Then, it crossed to PCGS as a 64, cert # 29607647(see Coin Facts). Unconfirmed sale in May, 2014 for mid 200,000.
No doubt a rare coin( top pop, and 1 of only 2 MS examples).
A similar event occurred when the 1817/3 half in 64 finally made it into a PCGS holder. More to come.

Interesting, to be sure.
What would be even more interesting (though much more difficult to determine) would be exactly how many unsuccessful attempts had been made to cross this coin in the past decade.
And now it is crossed.
Plain luck?
Changing standards?
Or something else?

maybe this has something to do why raw eliasberg estimated grades for the registry are considered/applied even though the coins weren't graded. if enough of them prove to be graded accurate or under, it makes sense why pcgs holds them in such high regard.
i'm sure this has been discussed at length and i'm just probably reiterating the point(s).
