Sometimes we forget those at home that were not enlisted but devoted years of their lives
to support those that serve. My father built ships in the Naval shipyard in SF for years, during
WWII. He only had one eye and could not enlist (though he tried). Moved from Carson City
to SF to do his part as a welder. Only one of us five kids were born in NV, our home state.
The fifth was born in CC (my little brother). So, that makes me a prune picker (oh my).

My father was also an original member of Merrill's Marauders, of which there were 3000. The hardships they went through was unbelievable. Their story is well documented in the book Spearhead by James E.T. Hopkins.

Holidays invented to honor the military are unnecessary. People drool over veterans enough. They get discounts wherever they go. I get it. They have a tough job. But they are volunteers. They signed up for this. Days like this and mother's day/father's day are days invented to honor people who are already supposed to be honored/respected in the first place. It is redundant. There is already veteran's day. The military gets 2 national holidays? Let's talk about defense spending. Why are we in such a massive deficit right now? Defense spending. Putting wars on credit cards. Buying weapons we don't need. The military is fed and fat and gets every privilege it wants. Enough of the gung ho business.

Sad that you have to post like that even here on this thread. When you go through what our family members do then you will have much better grounds to support your complaint so till then please do not complain about the sacrifices those in the military have given just so you can complain and post on a board like this.

My dad also fought in the war as a medic and shared some horrific stories while I was growing up. Stuff I don't know if I have the personal wherewithal to have handled myself.
With that stated, Veterans did fight for the exact freedom coinrollhunter is exercising. None of us would want it any other way. It may be slightly offensive to some- yet I say, carryon my wayward son.

If you check the US Constitution, you will find that providing for the national defense is a key role for our government. On the other hand, I don't think that other massively expensive entitlement programs -- retirement insurance, health care, etc. -- are specified. If you think that our military is overextended, I might agree with you, but we need to blame the Commander and Chief as well as Congress for this, not the members of the military who are merely taking orders from the leadership.

If this gets me bammed, so be it, but you are an idiot.

Try "Gung Ho" on this, pal. My Dad was killed at Monte Cassino and I never met him. When I, 40 years later, first saw pictures of him and my Mom together I couldn't believe what I saw.

A light in her eyes.... She lost that joy. And she, you should pardon the expression, soldiered on.

Now multiply her by millions of husbands, wives, parents, sons and daughters who privately seethe when they hear "Happy Memorial Day" as code for a "good time for grease and beer". "Happy"?

Are you feeling me?????? Are you feeling anything????

Are you feeling me scraping you off my shoe?

    I did not volunteer.

I receive no discounts wherever I go (please tell me what I am missing so that I can take
    advantage of those discounts)

I lived through "my war" although I do have a 10% disablility. (I do get a little over $100 a month).

My disability is a hearing problem as I was in a tank that exploded. Lucky it's all the problem I have.

The Gov't does not offer me hearing aids nor do they provide any benefits (no base privilege, PX, or
such) other than my monthly check (which I use to purchase and maintain my aids).

Glad we were there to allow free speech.

Have a great weekend on us.

Perhaps your diatribe would be better directed towards the politicians that trump up unnecessary wars then towards the people that actually served. It wasn't all volunteers either, if you look at history. I never served myself, but have no trouble with an extra day or two throughout the year to remember them. It's really not too much to ask. How else will you get a great price on that new mattress then? image

ColonelJessup many of us understand your feelings and many share them. On a daily basis I interact with my father who at 68yo is having many complications from chemical exposure during his 4 tours in Vietnam. Some of my own health concerns may be caused by these issues. Saying this I also remember the good, i think of the sacrifice, I think about how one gives his or her life for another, I think of the amazing bond that is formed in these situations, I think of the life long friendships that are made that are like no other, I also think of the amazing things witnessed by those that served both bad and good and most of all I remember that that sacrifice was made so we can all express our opinions even if we feel others opinions suck and are as inappropriate as coinrollhunters. With out your Fathers service and sacrifice for each and every person in the US we and coinrollhunter would not have what we do today. I thank you for what you family has given us.

    Very true
Right now on Milwaukee public TV they are playing interviews of VETS it is amazing to hear. The stories my grandfather told me were the most amazing stories I have ever heard or read and they were real, I do not know how to express tihi in writing as to the feelings this brings me. My grandfather on my moms side was in the NAVY and died when she was ung due to complications from service, I have some of his log journals in which he drew pics of the ships he was on, these thing will be passed on to my boys when I go...

U.S. military draft ends, Jan. 27, 1973. On the day in 1973, as the Vietnam War drew to a close, the Selective Service announced that there would be no further draft calls. It is an indescribable feeling to see a man in his 60s or 70s telling his experiences break down and start crying because of something he went through when he was a very young man. The courage to run forward knowing that thousands of bullets are shooting right at you is beyond me and to those that would complain about this holiday or the military think about this next time you want to complain about the thousands of people in the military who died so you can live. Hearing these stories on PBS has brought tears to my eyes and I am a big man 6ft4in tall and 325 pounds and I am honest enough to say I am crying, I can not say I would have the courage these people have.......agian I say Thank you for every thing you have done for each and every American>>>>>>

These posts about people crying and losing their body parts are sad...but they didn't have to join the military. Veterans get amazing retirement benefits, better healthcare than the rest of us (or do they-with this VA scandal...), and they get their education paid for by taxpayers. Along with their salary, and every other benefit.

Coinrollhunter why don't you go down to the VA hospital in your area and go to the rehab center and list off you complaints to those that have been shot or lived through a road side bomb or those that lived through stepping on a land mine and see how it goes, face the people you are complaining about face to face instead of hiding behind your computer and posting here. Do you have the courage to do this if so make a youtube video so we can see it. I very much doubt it will happen but you can always prove me wrong by showing you have at least a little courage, it is not like you have to worry about getting shot or having a suicide bomber give you a hug.

If you want to join the military, go for it. ...and tell the families of the victims who were killed yesterday in California by this mass murderer that they "don't have to worry about getting shot" because they aren't "courageous" enough to serve in the military or post some dumb youtube video to make you feel better.

Coinrollhunter you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to benefits. It is a daily battle just to see a Dr. because one Dr. may have 2000 patients not just a couple hundred, My father was just denied benefits and has to appeal that decision and he has had to do this over 15 times in the last 3 years. Very few military get the benefits you claim every person who served gets. Look at the National guard they are military also. I am asking you to please stop with your comments that are upsetting people that are already upset because they have to remember the pain and suffering that they or their loved ones went through. What is your purpose in this truly?

Were it not for the millions of men and women who have served, you would probably be speaking German right now, and probably wouldn't have the freedoms you now take for granted. It's pretty easy to take something for granted that others have earned for you! So rather than show respect, even by just keeping your mouth closed, you spew this. As someone who had relatives die in combat, or had their lives changed forever, I find this post very offensive. It reminds me of how the soldiers returning from Vietnam were spat upon. So, lighten up, you say? Go to a veteran's cemetery and tell them that.

I now understand that you would not want to meet in person and leave the safety of your cave and that is ok because thousands of men and women have " volunteered" to die for you sense the founding of this country just so you can do that very thing. Memorial Day began soon after the American Civil War ended, as Decoration Day. Decorating with flowers and flags the graves of soldiers who had died in the war was a way for people to say "thank you" for their sacrifice and remember how much our freedom and unity has cost.

May you get out of life what you put into it coinrollhunter. >>

You are never going to meet me in person. I wouldn't get near you in real life. I wouldn't feel safe around you at all. If you are this aggressive and cop like over the internet, you would be even scarier in person. I don't want to end up on the news for getting killed by some far right bozo who tried to pound his antiquated views into my head.

Coinrollhunter, it was stated in earlier post that you are an idiot. I wholeheartedly agree to which I might add, a coward. I served 24 years in the U. S Marine Corps defending this great nation's liberties such as freedom of speech. It is because of people like me that idiots and morons like you can espouse the crap you do. I will also tell the I would would do it all over again to make sure you keep those liberties. I will always be a proud to be a United States Marine and your mouth can never take that away from me!!
