Back up!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
For some strange reason my PC was down for a few days, I thought my hard-drive had bought-the-farm. Then this morning, just for the heck of it, I turned it on and Voila, it works!! I was already making plans to buy a new PC and running all the options through in my head, there's just too much coin action going on right now. I was having to squeeze in browsing at work whenever I could and that is fruitless.

I'm almost embarrassed to say that I missed the NutRanch a bit, but I did. I admit to being hopelessly hooked on the PCGS website, it's sort of like watching the Nightly News and finding out they no longer make Hostess Twinkies.image

Panic had set in!!

Keets did you figure out what was wrong with your computer? Have you cleaned the dust out of it and the power supply recently if it is a desk top? Also if you do not trust cloud back up you can now get a terabyte flash drive you can back up to.

recently having a problem with my computer reminded me to run a software cleaner from time to time

    like

    CCleaner

and cleaning out the dust is a very good idea also

I had another hard disk installed and back up to that hard disk weekly in addition to an external hard disk

about all I can figure is that the machine was in "hibernation" or doing a random/scheduled scan of some sort that I interrupted and it locked up in OFF.

Windows is known for locking up when it goes into deep hibernation, sometimes you actually have to unplug it and wait a few minutes and then plug it back in to be able to use the machine again. You have to wait a few minutes because the power supply has big capacitors that actually keep it going for a while.

Having said that, make sure you have a laptop sitting around for just this reason and that you get a network drive and set it up to backup every night. Saved my @$$ more than once.

-CCleaner (freeware at cnet.com) for cleaning files (the best solution for clearing browsing history).
-Compressed air blowout of desktop CPU every few months (unplug, remove side panel, blow out all dust, particularly on circuit boards and cooling fan).
-Disk Defrag (programs>accessories>system tools) every week or two to maximize hard drive data storage.

OP's problem sounds like a power supply is about to go out (and not come back on).
