    Love that silver strike!

Based upon the number of pieces I have seen in pewter, my gut feeling is that their estimate of only 60 pieces existing in pewter is low. However, my personal experience may be atypical, as I have for example held all five of the 1913 Liberty nickels in my hand at one time.

AU58. Oh, unless the creators built-in cabinet friction and wear on the high points to lend legitimacy (age) to the pieces?

    Nah. It's a 58 image

Apparently these are graded according to the same standards as 1804 DOllars.........

If it's a technical AU58, AU62 doesn't seem out of line from standard market grading standards.

And I could agree with that. But it graded 63. It's not a 63.

Coins like this are why the people who can afford to buy them now should be thankful that people like Bill Gates don't collect coins.

Capt. Henway: <<Based upon the number of pieces I have seen in pewter, my gut feeling is that their estimate of only 60 pieces existing in pewter is low.>>

I have also seen a large number and I, too, tentatively find this estimate of 6o to be too low.

Capt. Henway: <<my personal experience may be atypical, as I have for example held all five of the 1913 Liberty nickels in my hand at one time.>>

The Captain topped me. Although I, along with thousands of others, saw all five 1913 Liberty Nickels together in a display case in 2003, I never held all five. I have, at different times, held the three privately owned ones, while in holders. I was permitted to put a magnifying glass to a fourth without being permitted to hold the holder. I never held a raw 1913 Liberty Nickel, though I did hold the Eliasberg piece in its Bower-Merena holder before it was certified by the PCGS. Nearly ten years later, I held it again in its PCGS holder.

Zoins: <<If it's a technical AU58, AU62 doesn't seem out of line from standard market grading standards. ... Beautiful coin>>

    Weiss: <<And I could agree with that. But it graded 63. It's not a 63. >>

Does any expert, other than our friends ATS, firmly grade this piece as 63? I asked around. Most experts, who I asked, graded it as 61 or 62, though no one agreed to be quoted.

Regardless of whether it grades 58, 61, 62 or 63, the price realized was extremely strong and not a good deal.

Also, when were "Continental Dollars" made, by whom and where? They are not coins. Were they privately issued patterns?

I have sometimes toyed with the idea that, if the pewter pieces are the regular issue, even if an emergency one, are the silver and brass pieces the patterns?

    Don't know, just idle ruminations.

How about possible presentation pieces instead of patterns?
