Is there any tolerance for spotting on MS/PR 70 Silver Eagles?

Does the first minute milk spot knock the coin out of the 70 grade?

Is PCGS still guaranteeing the 70 grade on moderns?

"Further, this guarantee shall not apply to coins exhibiting environmental deterioration subsequent to certification, including spotting on modern silver coins."

"Coins exhibiting environmental deterioration. The PCGS Guarantee does not apply to coins exhibiting environmental deterioration subsequent to PCGS grading and encapsulation. This deterioration may include, but is not limited to, spotting, hazing, PVC contamination, changes in color, and corrosion."

On the part of buyers ... there shouldn't be.

What happens to all the coins that turn in holders? If there is a glut of ugly incorrectly graded coins in PCGS holders because there isn't a mechinism to get them off the market, what is the point of TPGs?

If you can't trust the grade on the holder because it might be one of the ones that "turned, spotted, PVCed, corroded or toned past good" what is the difference between buying raw? How many shady dealer will pop up buying MS70 eagles or other bad coins at a discount because of spots and sell them on ebay. Valuable coin that is covered in PVC? it is now worth more to pass it on then to pay a % to PCGS to restore.

I am shocked PCGS pulled the rug out from under their warrenty and the reaction has been so indifferent from the hobby. If my car company did the same there would be a class action so quick. Guess coins are different, the question is will the savings from diminished payouts be worth the impact to brand value. They have hedged yes

There is a difference with what was, and what is, for copper color, and I expect to see the same to with silver. In the future, everything will be white. It's good for sight unseen buying! image

When I was a child, when 70 "introduced" and then plastic was made, it was theoretical only. 70 is a line in shifting sands I might not have drawn. Who can say.

Just got in a set of 2011 25th ann silver eagles. All graded FS 70.

Two of the five coins were lightly spotted and I have listed for sale with the distractions noted. Fortunately the 2 keys were problem free.

Do you think the majority of sellers will be so forth coming? I personally don't. Without that absolute fail safe that if you get stuck with a dud (all collectors do at some point) and it is in a PCGS holder the collector will be made whole. I just fail to see the point if the only thing besides a handy carrying case is inclusion into the registry. If consumer confidence wanes collectors might even lose the liquidity we have grown to enjoy over the last decade or so that has forced dealer spreads narrower as they compete against auction houses and the Internet.

No warranty means no basal value anymore or at least one equivalent to raw for slabbed coins. My 2c

No I do not. I have bought several pieces and sets over the years, very few with spotting have been noted as such.

All the more reason to have looked at, bought, and only paid for, the coin and its inherent (and tangible) qualities.
