Thoughts on technical grade? Cleaned? Eye appeal?

I personally grade in the VF-20 to VF-25 range, mildly cleaned long ago and retoned. Pretty good example for a VERY tough coin.

    Nice coin....looks like a "light cleaning from the past."
    Honestly folks, how many coins from the 1800's haven't been "re-conditioned?"

    The overall flatness makes me think F-15. Agree with the previous past cleaning.

    The one thing to remember with this particular issue is that LIBERTY is more weakly struck than with other dates in the series.

    It will grade VF 30. I don't have it in hand, but I and others do read too much into a coin when all we have is a picture. I think it is a nice coin.

    It's nice for an 1855-S half, if you can live with the cleaning. I predict the obverse fields will have moderate to heavy hairlining in hand. The halos around the stars at the upper left and around Ms. Liberty's arm are a dead giveaway that the coin was cleaned by wiping. That being said, the coin doesn't have any obvious signs of tooling, which instantly makes it above average for an 1855-S half! It's difficult to find an example of this date with that much meat left on it, but I wouldn't buy it with the intention of submitting to PCGS for grading (besides Genuine).

    VF-25. Not a bad example. Good for the Dansco.

    This coin is one of the reasons why I am glad that I no longer grade coins for a living. The obverse with the incomplete LIBERTY is technically less than Fine, but the reverse is a solid VF-30.

    If this were a debate you could take the position of F-12, F-15 or VF-20 and defend it. As for me, I think I will go make another cup of coffee.

    I'm in the net vf20-25 details camp and the reverse is definitely vf-30 or so. but the cleaning bothers me so I would pass.
