Neat IHC pick from the TNA show this weekend...

I found this at the TNA this morning... I'm thinking it's a terminal state of S-10 (the direction seems to match the photo). There can't be that many with this big of a break (it completely bisects the obverse)- that die was finished! Anyone have a different opinion of what this might be?

The pics and the grade don't make it easy. It starts on the obverse rim and runs along the 'U' in UNITED. After crossing the portrait it runs to and along the 'O' in 'OF' to the rim. In the pics, you can kinda see a small bump on the 'O' at 10:00 where it emerges and runs to the rim.

A significant die crack similar to the 1864 With L S16. As with that variety, the decision to list a die crack as a separate variety was done only after considerable questioning of its desirability with Indian Cent variety collectors. There is significant enough interest, however the variety is not designated for early die state examples without the die crack should they exist. {64BN, 45}

S10b 1864 No L, Bisecting die crack. Obv. 22: (LH) Late die stage: A large die crack extends from the rim at 1:00 through the center of the coin to the rim at 8:00. A full die cud forms in the center of the die. Rev. AU: Olive leaf and shield points away from the denticles. Pro- nounced die wear. A die crack similar to S10a. These are die states and will exist in different stages of deterioration. Values and interest will vary depending on how late the die state is. {15, 6}

S10c 1864 No L, Bisecting die crack. Obv. 23: (C) Late die stage: A large die crack extends from the rim at 11:00 to the rim at 4:00, through the center of the die. Die crack from the rim at 5:00 through the date. A die crack connects the tops of the OF. Rev. AV: Olive leaf and shield points away from the denticles. Attributed to: Joe Brame. Interesting... I will admit that as a VAMmer, I would think B and C would be later states of the same die- it sounds like they are different dies.

I was reluctant to list bisecting die cracks as varieties, since they are die states. Sure, the dies may have cracked during hardening, but they are still die states of non-variety dies. This shouldn't take anything away from them, but once they start popping up all over the place, I decided that it could get out of hand if I gave them each a variety listing. So, there is S10 for all bisecting die cracks for 1864 No L.
