I had a bad eBay experience; I'm moving on (1st world problem. Time for a beer & enjoy the rest

Changed the whole Thread Title. No need to block the seller. No need to continue whining image Enjoy your weekend everyone image

Problem Resolved

I bought a coin. Seller charged $5.25 for shipping. Received item with an envelope and materials which cost at most $1.
I sent seller positive feedback despite his overpriced shipping and I knocked his Shipping Cost feedback down for that.

Seller responds like this (quoting):

Do not bid on any more of our items you are now blocked for life if you didn't agree with our shipping terms then you shouldn't a bid on the item you piece of s***

I probably would not have hit his rating as the shipping amount was likely known. His response though has no place on a civilized forum.

Because I knocked his ebay rating on shipping costs, and he probably knew he wasn't giving me $5 for shipping which he charged me

I don't think that it is possible to overcharge for shipping as long as the price is noted on the sale. Any saavy buyer will realize that $5.25 is a hose job on a $15 coin and adjust his bidding accordingly.

An auction house that I often buy from charges double what reasonable shipping should be. I still bid aggressively, but on lesser expensive items, factor in the profit center gouge.

Why was it necessary to knock his shipping? Taking the time to print a label cost money, the paper cost money, the ink cost money, the envelope cost money, the packing materials cost money, the time to pack the item cost money, overhead cost money, putting the package into the mail box cost money, and it sounds like you agreed to the shipping cost. I do not agree with the response from the seller but if you did not like the shipping cost why didn't you negotiate a different cost, was shipping cost taken into consideration when determining purchase price? Why does everyone think they should receive postage and handling for free when it cost the seller money to do these things?

While I do understand with your being a bit upset, I have to agree with MGLICKER. As long as the service was the same as stated in listing, and the price was upfront, he did do what was stated. If he charged $7.95 and put it in a priority flat rate envelope for $5.15 would he still get a low rating.

Was the shipping cost known to you at the time of bidding?

What was the amount of the winning bid, i.e. what was the shipping charge in relation to the overall price of the piece?

Certainly not enough to go blocking somebody if all they did was charge me what they said they were going to charge me and then get mad when I complained about it. Unprofessional for sure...but so far not enough to block.

It was an item that sold for <$10 + $5.25 shipping (known during bidding), and I factored that shipping into my bidding.

Well, for fairness sake, you really ought to check the coin price vs the shipping price before buying. Many sellers with low cost items use shipping as a profit center. If they do, and you don't like it...do not buy it.

Was it shipped with tracking, sig confirmation, was it insured as these all ad to the cost based on final sale price? Sellers response was wrong but the buyers was wrong to start.

I do know this takes place, but that is why ebay has their feedback system set up the way they do (although it's not much of a deterrant to determined bidders) image

No tracking or sig confirmation; just stamps on an envelope. The costs you mentioned on your first post were valid and things I did consider.

5.25 is the sellers standard shipping fee on all the low dollar coins I looked at as completed listings and most sold for wht they should including that cost.

Sounds to me like shipping COST wasn't the real issue here. (Buyer and seller agreed on it).

But the shipping METHOD, including the overall protection of the item, was sub-par.

I agree the buyer has a valid beef there.

Good point Wabbit. Edit to add: we do not know how the item was actually packaged!

This is most likely the listing being complained about as it is the only one that complained about shipping and the seller is at 100% feedback with great feedback comments at that.

Seller just sent me the following message:

My shipping covers all of my fees which is why it's $5 covers cost of shipping materials cost of shipping eBay fees and PayPal fees and if you didn't like it you shouldn't a bid on it

So this seller charges 'shipping' costs for ALL ebay fees, not just for shipping.

It is interesting that you are the only one having issues with this seller. The feedback from other buyers is outstanding stating that the item was well packaged (so most likely not an issue) and even gives free gifts on many items sold. Seems to me that more is going on here than is being presented. I am not trying to cause an issue ith you but this is a bit out of wack to me. You got a coin that was selling for 56.00 for 14.00 what is your gripe seriously?

Actually, it's as cut and dry, and as simple as I presented it. I don't need to hide behind anything here.
If members here think I'm out of line here then so be it. I was just confronting an unethical situation and presenting a very negative response from what I expected to be a reasonable ebay seller.

I charge for all my fees in the overall price of every item I sell as it is part of the cost of doing business. I you think you are not paying these fees on every item you buy in your life from toilet paper to a can of peas you should just stop buying things, grow your own food and live off the grid in a mud and cow dung house you built from hand. I charge fees in each and every listing I post so please do not buy from me if this offends you as it is a cost of doing business for every business.

the coin was bought and the coin was delivered the cost were known in advance. The sellers contract is to get the coin to you in a timely manner he apparently did that.
The shipping cost was known to you , you agreed to pay that period. OP is wrong and I have to agree with the seller here.

Bad faith as a buyer to use the feedback system to inflict damage already being aware of the fees in advance. Why buy if the stated fees are an issue.

Apology accepted, and I apologize to you and anyone else who was offended by this post. I do understand there are strong fees involved with selling things on eBay, but my
only gripe here was receiving an item packaged less than adequately expected for what I paid in shipping costs. And then to receive a negative response from the seller was
    disappointing as well.

I kinda get the impression that suggesting to block him as a buyer is not to avoid a problem buyer but more as a punishment for his being a poor seller/communicator. However, I could be wrong. It is my opinion that blocking buyers should be reserved for bad buyers.

If it was just shipped in a stamped envelope, then I can see the gripe. Seller does state in his listing "SHIPPING WILL BE FAST AND PROFESSIONAL." I think I would have just sent him a message questioning the quality of the shipping compared to the price. Coins can easily get lost out of an ordinary envelope. I have seen this in-hand. A hole in the envelope with no coin. If he didn't see your reasoning then for the message, then I just wouldn't take the chance of buying from him again. His response was quite rude but I wonder if a message first to the seller may have changed his attitude???

a seller that concerned with their DSR ratings should practice more professional business habits. a guy pays $5 for shipping, he expects close to that in shipping safety; otherwise what is the point in paying it?

Problem isn't really with the buyer or the seller in this case, it is Ebay.

A legitimate disagreement which is noted in the feedback by Stone, gives Ebay license to hose the seller on fees for the next twelve months.

They really need to back off.

If the coin wasn't protected adequately in the packing materials used, I can understand your anger with his over-priced shipping fee, but you did agree to buy the item with his stated shipping price and could have just not accepted his terms from the get-go.

I agree that the seller's vulgar note to you was unprofessional.

I agree that it was acceptable for you to ding his 1-5 star rating for overpriced shipping if ... after taking into account the total cost of his time/labor to pack it up, tape, address labels, bubble bag mailer, any printer ink involved, time and gas money to take it to the P.O., actual postage cost, etc., you feel his shipping costs were more than a dollar or two over what he charged you. That's why eBay has that star rating system for sellers, i.e. so future buyers can be warned about his practices.

Unless I'm mistaken, the only thing blocking him will accomplish is to stop him from buying from you. I guess if you think he may want to retaliate by buying from you and then giving you a neg', that's a good reason to block him. I don't think there's any way to block his listings so you won't see them anymore though.

Seriously you left negative shipping cost for a 5.25 shipping fee ???

First off ebay only places postage cost on the label, not signature and insurance cost
Second 5.25 to pay someone to label package and ship either pickup or go to post office especially when stated I wouldn't have care if it had one stamp on it.
Thirdly you read it you expected the actually shipping cost to be 5.25 really really
Remind me , if you read the cost and bid you have no gripe or have never been much of a businessman
kinda sound like customers who want you to buy for the same you sell for
    I just don't get it.

All that being said I don't agree with the sellers response I would have just blocked you and said nothing.

I have S&H as high as 19.99 , but the actual postage cost much less, but insurance cost much more, however like said before only the postage cost is displayed on label when
    shipping through ebay

another reason to build your shipping costs into your BIN price and offer free shipping. Buyer's aren't stupid, they look at total cost for the item even when it's an auction. A separate charge for shipping only increases the odds for shipping unhappiness.

I have received a coin or two in just a plain white standard type envelope after paying $4-$5 for shipping, wti. Now for the OP, he's not even saying if it was a bubble type envelope. So I would be a little perturbed. Anymore, I'll ask if my item will be insured. Seems like if I don't say anything, the shipping stands a chance of getting messed up.

the packaging is more to protect the seller , for the item to be delivered to the buyer in good condition. The seller took all the risk its a moot point as the item was received in good condition and in a timely manner. The seller is 100% responsible for the item to arrive in good condition and if the packaging was bad he was self insuring and taking the risk as he is responsible to perform 100%.

Stone, I like you, your threads, and your posts. This thread, however, is unlike what I have come to expect from you.
If the shipping were charged in excess of $10+, for material that can be sent cheaply in an envelope and at a cheap rate, then I could see it. However, for an item that is <$20, ~$5 shipping & fees is, to me, reasonable. Particularly when stated upfront.

If you had questions/expectations on how the shipping would be handled for that fee, you should have asked PRIOR to winning. I understand that isn't something normally done and, as such, you should have just written it off as having gotten to you in good condition and left it at that. Of that $5.25, whether he paid the USPS for insurance, or did the "self-insurance" game, and adding in materials cost, how much do you think he gouged you for his time handling the package and getting it to the post office for you? He made out like a bandit? If not, then you were out of line going off on him.

If anything, you owe the seller an apology. Not the forum, aside from the $5.25 we should all charge you for taking the time to read the rant image

"sent to me in a less than reasonable manner"

Did you communicate YOUR "reasonable Manner" to the seller?

So you hit him for posting a price, you factoring it into your bid, and then hitting him for YOUR vision?

I have over a 2500 sales rating on ebay. I sell odd shaped and heavy items. I get the occasional ping for shipping costs, yet, I refund shipping money when I charge to much, but eat the cost if I charge too little.

I seems the person who only buys, and not sells, is the one who does not understand how involved shipping is to meet ebay requirements. For example, I go buy a double walled box for $3, spend $5 on bubble wrap, buy high quality 4" tape, weigh it, and then drive it as a separate trip to FedEx since the buyer waited 5 days to pay, and it was the only shipment for the day. The FedEx shipping cost is $27.31, and I charged $32. Ebay and paypay take about $3.50, my total cost is over $38, not counting fuel in an F250 truck, so I lose $6 on shipping costs, then the buyer says I over changed by $5 and pings me.
