Coin Forums are here to stay
We live in a world of Internet forums dedicated to the discussion of every imaginable topic (and even some unimaginable
). Even if PCGS and NGC shut down their forums, other coin forums (like the AA CoinTalk forum) would expand, and new ones would pop up. It's just the way of the world.
If there is misleading or unworthy discussion occurring on a message board, of any kind, the way to improve the situation is to right the wrong by participating. Bad information is propagated as gospel all over the internet in forums. I was shocked to see what fallacies were being disseminated on a forum for patients with thyroid cancer. You think that coin information can be dangerous, what about misleading information about cancer? Which will kill you first? Nonetheless, suppressing forum conversation is not the solution.
I respect Laura's viewpoint but have to disagree with her on this point. The forum horse is out of the barn. Pandora's Box has been opened. The cat is out of the bag. I am out of pithy expressions.

Only occasionally do we see a learned topic, that does not get sidetracked.
The most prevalent discussion today may help posters stick to coins, and hopefully PCGS change the rules, and clean up this mess.

Elvis has left the building.
I'd think the moment you remove yourself is the moment you lose your right to then ridicule it
In addition, despite the casual way in which many of us communicate now, it can only help one's reputation to use spellcheck and to make sure one communicates in as grammatically correct a way as is appropriate for the conversation.
No one will be able to hear one's message if all anyone can hear is mockery of the incorrect use of the English language.

I do believe that coin forums offer a lot of valuable information to folks who are looking for answers.
I also believe that a lot of misinformation gets disseminated on coin forums but usually, that misinformation gets corrected. Either through knowledge from others or through direct experience.
Things change. Information changes.
I like the thoughts about folks identifying who they are but I also know that this would be impossible to enforce. You see, the more that we participate, the better off we are for determining who we listen to and who we ignore.
The name is LEE!
The beauty of the site is on almost any question someone will come up with a pertinent and reasonably accurate response. It's our job to find it.
And, I have no doubt from my experience with hockey message boards that someone could easily start another board if restrictions here and elsewhere get to be too much.
So, yes....message boards are here to stay. They ARE useful, and ARE in demand. They are also fairly good at self policing, whether you believe it or not.

I'd agree with you....except that you wrote it on the internet, and I don't know your real name....
She is certainly colorful and that is a positive to an often otherwise dry hobby.
Laura is also wrong about reigning in or ending the coin forums. Many have been saved from fake coins and dare I say overgraded coins by spending some time here.
For a leading numismatist to try to throttle down a place of enlightenment (and of course sometimes delumination) is irresponsible.
Sometimes, though as dealers, we end up on the bad side of an over graded coin sale and do the right thing, which is make it right with the buyer.
Perhaps if everyone with misinformation was shot.
I'll hold the gun..... just tell me who needs to be shot.

Ummmm, how about those golden oldies, "The Genie's out of the bottle" or "The train has already left the station"?

Seems too many people are always trying to shut down speech they don't like. Why don't we also shut down much of broadcast news and newspapers because there is a lot of misinformation there too.
<< <i>This forum should be here a long time, but changes are in order. Most of the advanced collectors and knowledgeable numismatists do not post, reply, and just stay away. >>
What changes do you propose to attract these people to the forum?
How certain are you that advanced collectors and knowledgeable numismatists would participate here if the rules were changed?
Most collectors are not advanced collectors and never will be. Would they no longer be welcome to post here?

Good questions. There are definitely advanced collectors here already. Those who do not post probably choose not to for reasons that no change would alter. And if there were some who would post after some change then that change would probably drive others away.
