Another Baseball HOF question (selling sealed boxes)

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 13,052 ✭✭✭✭✭
I, like so many others purchased a few of the HOF coins only to have placed into "back order" status;

2014 BASEBALL HOF SILVER PROOF 1 $51.95 $51.95 1 unit backordered. Expected to ship on 06/12/2014.
2014 BASEBALL HOF SILVER UNC 1 $47.95 $47.95 1 unit backordered. Expected to ship on 06/19/2014.

I am considering buying outright a PCGS MS69 Silver Dollar version for my collection and selling these two in their sealed boxes, when I get confirmation that they are on their way.

Do you think that this would be a good or bad idea?

    It depends on what you want to do with it. Having one graded protects it from damage if that is what you are looking for. You can probably make enough selling the other 2 to pay for the MS69. Your choice.

    Why would you need to choose when you can have both!

    With a lot of hot moderns in the frenzy phase of selling 69s go for their highest prices then trend downwards. 70s purchased in the early phase of a market wave, have a better chance of holding their value or appreciating. Right now we are in the frenzy phase which has escalated due to the delayed release , so I think the FS coins are getting pricey. I think if you don't care about First Strike labels, I would reccomend listing your dollars as presales now on eBay as a sealed set (in case the mint ships them together) You'll get top $ if you sell now before the next wave of coins is released. Then camp on that money until the big sellers wave of non FS graded coins hits eBay and pick up a 70 -probably in the $175 range .
    If you have submitting privileges already, non FS moderns are a cheap submission and you are almost guaranteed two 69s . You may luck out with a 70 or two so that's another option to consider.

    Being a type collector, leaning heavily towards business strikes, I would only "need" one. I could send them to PCGS for grading, but the fees are getting ridiculous for small quantities of coins.

    There is a possibility that the two that I ordered may be MS/PR70's in waiting, why pay for the fees when someone else already has?

    That is what I was thinking as well. I have not seen many, other than a box of 10, sealed boxes of the HOF on eBay.

    Selling sealed boxes on eBay is risky! You run into a scammer who says you sent him an empty box and you are sunk. Paypal/eBay will believe the buyer most likely. Just something to ponder.
