1922 no d. Guess the grade. You vs. PCGS
I am terrible at photographing copper, especially in scratched up slabs...so please forgive the picture quality. I got this in a trade. Obverse details are very weak, but the surface quality is EXCELLENT imho.

<< <i>Wow, grades are all over the place...from vg8 to xf40!!! lol. This is such a tough coin to grade. PCGS gave it a VF-20, though I personally think it is technically more of a F-15 if I were to be honest. However, the surfaces are absolutely immaculate, nice even brown, no problems....everything I want in a Lincoln; so because of that I am good with the VF20 grade. thanks for your inputs! >>
That's kindda what I figured it would grade! Many of the posters here don't seem to realize you can't and don't grade a 22 from the obverse! Your coin has an outstanding Obv. for a 20! I think it could easily upgrade based on your Obv. picture. How about a crisper picture of the Reverse??? I have seen XF's with no more Obv. detail!

As the one who suggested a grade of VG-8 ( for the obverse and F-12 for the reverse) I can tell you that I have learned a lot. I based my opinion on strict interpretation of the ANA grading standard. If PCGS starts basing grading standards upon the relative quality of the year minted, then IMHO they are grading to the date and not the standard.
Could this be a new politically correct grading standard??

Starts? New?
I dunno.
A poll I ran long ago showed most in here, 78% of participants, consider grading specific to issue, date, MM etc.
How do you think grading works: Poll 2.05.13
Best wishes,
Eric

Ahh, so now the grading is on the curve........
The best example is a 70 and the worst examples are a 6? If I were to buy that coin the grade would be VG +/-, and not subject to a dealer/PCGS upgrade from ANA standard. Market acceptable cannot be that subjective. If the strikes are not good for a particular year, so be it. Why cannot there be some years where the best circulated specimen is VF??

I don't think this is anything new re grading by issue, date, mm...

I'm in your camp and kudos on the VF 20. That's a tough place to be , as wear goes. I am in agreement with your thinking regarding the grade being a little generous but the coin's not in hand and who would kick a gift horse in the mouth ? Except in the case where availability and one's own desire for ownership dictates such a price as to call the "fine tuning" into question. Which happens.

I agree as to issue, but sliding grading standards as to date and mint mark is by it's nature intellectualy dishonest. So, what would you grade this coin if it were a 1924-D as an example?

You think grading to mm and date is "intellectualy" [sic] dishonest?
Hmm. Explain what you mean exactly.

Grading is not...one size fits all. If you want to start a new thread, do so, this thread is about the 22 no d.

I'm not very well versed in Lincoln grading. I do know the obverse on the 22-D suffers and normally the reverse carries it (at least, that's what I've personally seen.......could very well be wrong).
