Do you prefer to collect bigger coins or smaller coins?

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,592 ✭✭✭✭✭
Different people obviously have different series that they like to collect. Do you prefer to collect bigger coins or smaller coins? Let's say for definitional purposes the following coins would be included in the following categories:

Big coins = Large cents, 2 Cents, quarters, half dollars, dollars, eagles, double eagles, $50 slugs etc.

Small coins = 1/2 cents, small cents, trimes, 3 cent nickels, nickels, dimes, double dimes, all the other gold denominations. EDITED TO ADD: ... AND OF COURSE, HALF DIMES! (Sorry MrHD).

While I enjoy looking at all coinage, I collect bigger coins, predominantly quarters and half dollars. Also, as I get older I find it more difficult to see detail in the smaller coins with my bare eyes.

Good question as my favorite series is the Morgan buck. Second favorite is the Half Dime. Don't care all that much for most coins in between.

I like coins of all sizes. Big coins are impressive to hold but small coins are impressive in their own right, and with digital photographs, eyesight limitations are largely taken out of the equation. Take this obol from Akragas, from 410BC for example (apologies for the darkside post):

    Or this one:

A hekte from 500BC, made of electrum. This is only 10mm in diameter, but can be appreciated much larger thanks to digital images.

I agree with most of the above.
I like bigger coins because it is much easier for me to appreciate the detail.
I love Indian head cents, but can not enjoy them well / see them enough to collect them.

Give me half dollars, dollars, eagles, double eagles, half crowns and crowns any day!!!

I am putting together a type set, so I should answer both. That being said, I am working on two date sets and those are both large coins.

Easy question for any of us over 50 wearing glasses. Bigger! Though there is a limit. I'm not into 'hockey puck' big. Quarters, Halves, Dollars and Crown sized coins are just right for me.

I recognize that half dimes have always been sort of the forgotten little sisters, but to be completely eliminated from your poll is inexcusable. It is true that, as we grow older, it is more difficult to see the details on smaller coins without using optics, but to completely remove the half dimes from consideration seems a bit extreme. I do not collect coins merely because of their size, or even in spite of their size; I simply collect what I like. And for me it is the half dimes, despite the discrimination in your obviously biased poll.

This is an interesting question. I mainly collect dimes so I guess I'm kind of glad that a lot of people pass on these coins (less competition).

An interesting post I read on the forum a few days ago, hypothesized that small coins have greater potential for appreciation in the future as improved photo quality becomes more commonplace. I'm not saying that I agree with this theory (though am hopeful) but it's certainly something to consider.

Maybe if the carrot industry does a better job of promoting their product, eyesight deterioration will be less of an issue image

Generally I like half-dollars and larger. A $50 slug would be OK if someone want to send me one. image

When it comes to small coins, I generally appreciate overall look and luster in-hand or with a loupe and fine detail by photographing it under good light. The method has really increased my enjoyment of dime and smaller coins:

I like all sorts of coins but I will have to say I like the larger coins best because of eyesight but I know there is some great value to be had in some of the smaller series.

    Stunning Dime Bryce!!!
Though I can appreciate a small coin, and own some really TINY yet gorgeous ancients, my aging eyes for the most part have me leaning towards larger coins when given a choice. Then, I don't have to use the loupe or camera image to fully appreciate the piece..

I agree with the size not being relevant. It's the amount of meat that matters. And of course we want "GRADE A " beef , don't we ? As relevant as I can get , boss.

I collect all US type 1793-1999, so I need one of each, all sizes and metals.

The series I do collect are primarily the in-between sizes of quarters and half dollars, and half eagles and eagles.

The small coins are too small for my aging eyes and fumblefingers, and the big coins tend to be too expensive for the early material I prefer.

Age has been the determining factor on the size I collect. I am collecting silver dollars
now but soon I am afraid it be hockey pucks as the very large pieces of silver will be the
coin of necessity rather than choice. image

The equalizers are high quality digital photography, loupes and the fact slab sizes are the same. In the world of 'Raw' I certainly prefer large cent size coins. I couldn't imagine dealing with raw T1 gold dollars! My favorite coin to hold is a 1737 pillar dollar
