(But don't peek at that last link until you've voted above. As of this posting, it's not been added there yet, but soon will be, slab label and all.)

    For the record, I have voted the "Neutral" option, since the coin is encapsulated. Sometimes I'll express my grade opinion in these polls and sometimes I'll pass. I do personally believe the coin is solid for the grade the TPG assigned it.

    It might not even be a Circ anything. image

    Rest assured that if it WERE a circ in any grade below AU, however, I would have tried to make it a CircCam coin.

    (So there's a blatantly obvious hint, though anybody who would guess below AU details on this piece is probably pretty obtuse anyway.)

    trimes are tough to grade in hand at times , My wag is MS63 plus. I see the hairlines on the reverse but think its in a reg holder and doubt they brought ti down to 62.

    Majority seem split between AU58 and MS63 as of this post.

    Which isn't too surprising, I guess. AU58/MS63 splits seem to happen quite a bit with classic 19th century US type, at least in these kind of GTG polls.

    If it weren't my coin and I didn't know the plastic grade, I myself might have been torn between 58 and 63, just because sometimes it's hard to judge between light "cabinet friction" on high points of a coin versus soft strike, at least from photographs.

    Edited to add:

    We might as well make this thread the "Primetime Trime Time", so post yours, especially ones with grades, if you think they're relevant to this discussion. A little comparison is always fun.

    Have at it, y'all. I won't be in the least insulted to see your trimes in my thread. The more the merrier. In fact, I'd love to see a nice '53-O. Those have always interested me. Something magical about the only mintmark on a trime. Kinda like the earliest branch mint halves and gold coins with the C,D,O mintmarks over the date on the obverse. Love those.

    It could be MS-62 or AU-58. I voted MS-62 there are too hairlines for it to grade any higher.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Some of those might be on the plastic. I have the coin in hand now (it arrived this afternoon), but don't have a good loupe close by and the light ain't so great here. Looking at it here, I don't see any of those hairlines on the coin OR on the plastic. Gotta get some better light and better lenses than my reading specs.

    The answer, of course, is just a click away, as mentioned. (At least the answer to what the TPG called it. You may, of course, call it what you will.)

    I went with 64, thinking that eye appeal propped it up there.
    I can be horrible with some of these GTG coins.
    I like it no matter the result.

    Larry- your MS62 is nice. Nice toning, cool clashes. Why is the bottom of the date so weak, I wonder? Could it be a slightly concave/ convex strike?

    I always figured it was a grease filled die or maybe the clash damaged the die.

    I like how the toning sets off the shield clashmarks behind the "III" on that coin.

    LOVE that 1855 with the neat clashing.

    I missed the grade on the op coin by 1/2 point. Pretty good for me...especially on a trime.image

    For some reason a lot of 1855-- 3 cent silvers come with a weak struck date like that. If you find a nice 1855 with fully struck date be prepared to pay a premium.

    Nope. Just sold off all of my other collections, to boil everything down to one Box of 20.

    "Quality over quantity", and all that good stuff, y'know.

    I am running a bit lower on remaining stuff to sell, so before too long (maybe after two or three more nice purchases), all of this buying spree will come to a screeching halt, and I'll revert to being my usual impoverished self. image
