A Colorful, Battle Scarred Indian Cent for Your Consideration

CatbertCatbert Posts: 7,631 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is a common as dirt date (79M), but with some pretty colors and a few scars emphasized considerably with the big pics (PCGS MS64 RB). Those little nicks don't bother me when seen in hand. The colors shown are very accurate, but if you wish to see the strike better, you can see this coin on CoinFacts - but in those pics the color is too red shifted. I bought this coin at FUN from Angel Dees and due to its charms, it has reserved a spot in my basic U.S. type set.

Do you like this toning? It seemed unusual to me and that was a factor for me in deciding to buy it.

I can barely notice any hits on it, so I think you're overemphasizing the term 'battle scars'

    Nice coin

I like it a lot and it reminds me of the colors that proof pieces can sometimes acquire.

Love that coin, which is why it was in my Indian collection image

Very glad it ended up with you, given how hard the decision was to liquidate my toned Indians to focus on finishing my lincolns.

I really like it, its an exceptional piece for the grade. 1901 was the date of the first Indian Cent I ever had.

I think it's unusual, and I do like it.

Which is also why I bought this coin last year.....some think it's AT - perhaps it is, I don't know, but it was relatively inexpensive and
I thought it was worth it. It's actually closer in color to the OP's coin; his photography skills far surpass mine:

Ha! This needs an explanation of which I will provide.

Coppercolor and I had exchanged several emails regarding his interest in another IHC that I had that was a better date with wild toning in an OGH. I had trouble parting with it, but decided that I'd bring it to FUN and would sell it to him afterall. I had decided I had too much $ in it for this slot in my type set and wanted to raise funds for FUN. So, I arrive at the show, quickly look up Coppercolor and it turns out he's focused now exclusively on beautiful Lincolns and was selling his IHCs. So, I sell that coin to someone else.

Of course, had I realized that this IHC formerly in Coppertcolor's possession was destined for me, I could have maybe saved some money by cutting out that evil dealer image

I also own a colorful mint package toned Franklin Half that coppertoning swears was also once in his collection. This tells me that I think I just need to follow him around and buy his second hand stuff!

Thanks to all for your comments.

    Interesting.......

So is coppercolor just a collector who remarkets his collections at coin shows?? In other threads I have questioned whether dealers are really speculators, but I guess that they are many times collectors as well. But to my thinking, a "dealer" has to maintain an inventory of more than just one or two series. Kind of like a plumbing wholesaler that sells only sinks.

I believe Coppercolor is a collector who has found a lot of nice coins and, as his collection has taken a different focus, or he wants more funds for a different path of collecting, he makes a tough decision to sell some of his collection.
I have purchased from him on the BST and he very likely sold his (obviously very nice) IHC(s) to a dealer, who then sold to the OP.

Not sure why you would take this thread to focus on Coppercolor and speculate on whether he is "just a collector" who remarkets at coin shows....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

My focus was just to qualiify coppercolor as a collector and not a dealer. This means that coppercolor does not owe the OP any duty that could be construed to a dealer. A dealer is usually known to be an "expert" and is expected to yield expert opinion on his inventory. I have found this expertise only exists with the upper tier of dealers. The lower tier of dealers can be more accurately described as speculators looking to make a fast buck on coins for which they have no expertise. If the OP has a problem with the transaction, then he has to look to himself and his evaluation of the seller.

No doubt a short "rotational" video would do the coin great justice.

    Hey OINK. Please. Relax.

Coppercolor is just another passionate collector with an excellent eye for quality, IMO. The point of my post about him was that it can be a small world and it was coincidental that I happen to now own one of his prior pieces after having many prior discussions about his love for colorful IHCs.

Edited to add the word "now"

Really? I am not sure why someone would take this thread to post the above obnoxious jab at a new member who has conducted himself as a gentleman since he joined the Forum.

Hey Oink, I've been enjoying your posts. It's great seeing fresh faces.

I am definitely a collector, life long. But there isn't much monetary reward in my profession so I've turned to a little vest pocket type dealing to keep things in the black. I've uncovered some beautiful coins an have the fortune of passing them along to some great friends.

I appreciate that you are expressing your position on the deal.. I thought that was the case and that you were being unreasonably held to some account that only dealers should be held to. I too hope that some day if I want to sell some coins in my collection, that I can sell them as is / where is, rather than having to render a technical opinion that can be reasonably expected from a dealer. Just because I sell you an IHC, please don't expect me to represent the coin in a professional manner like Rick Snow will. I would rather sell to a "qualified" buyer with the ability to asses the coin on it's merits.

I had previously responded that I thought the coin was very nice. I do not understand the buyers remorse. Or maybe the buyer's insecurity. OINK

  • In my previous post I forgot to say that I think this coin is amazing and love the colors. My view of the best dealers are those that have been collectors as collectors for the most part know more about their coins than any dealer would. Many dealers in many industries do not know all there is to know about their products, that is just how it is. Constantly trying to qulify every seller of coins the way you do is just going to drive you crazy along with everyone else. I just sold a coin but am not a big time dealer but because I sold more than one coin from different series does that make me a dealer. Oh never mind Very nice coin and I stand by my description of the colors, just wonderful and very unique to behold. YThank you for sharing such an interesting coin.

I don't read that anywhere in the OP's posts. Maybe it's your reading comprehension that's in question here.
