1936 Cuba Peso

Can anyone shed some light on why this closed at $2000 (incl juice)?

    These are tough in 64 and higher- not sure why it was bid up to $2k.

    Interesting Art Deco design with appeal- not sure about how many survived. I say that in part because back in the day, Havana was quite the playground for the for tourism and gambling. I suspect some were used at the Nigh Clubs/Casinos

    Up until 1949 or so Cuba used US paper money in circulation along with their own coins. There was a big competition between the NY Federal Reserve District and the Atlanta Federal Reserve District to supply paper money to Cuba.

    Until Castro took power and debased the currency, their coins were minted to the same specifications as US coins.

    There are 12 of these graded by NGC in MS64, so I'm thinking there were two guys who just had to have it.

    This wasn't the first time a peso of this type and year hit that level of pricing...lot 24143 from 2012 - also 1936 ABC Peso

    63s traded in the 250-350 range afew years back- not sure what they are at today
