The prices for most commodities go up and down in cycles, why not gold?

From what I've seen, more people buy gold and silver when their prices are high than when they are low, which I don't understand.

Still premiums but enough bashers bashed on it, and there were some very extreme prices for common pieces (even 2 grades up, the coins weren't worth a ton) that the driving force decided to divest, I believe.

Common coins with gold stickers have dropped in price. Rare coins with gold stickers continue to command a premium.

Excuse my ignorance, but are you able to show me an example of a rare coin with a gold CAC sticker?

Not a tulip craze. I put them in the same category as Regency holders. Slabbing has revolutionized the market and is now part of its history, and will always be collectible as such. The coin is still the thing, but coin collectors sometimes get a little bit off course, so there will always be some of them that are interested in the holders, and not without reason. We can argue about market bubbles but I do think there is some foundational value here. The longterm viability of CAC will also play a part. PCGS/NGC have already proven themselves for a generation.

I'm holding out until oreville comes up with a Gold kacked OGH inside of a sealed bottle of GoldSchlager. Ain't nobody gonna accuse me of drinkin' KoolAid.

In my case, I enjoy cherry picking coins in undergraded slabs at the various shows and then watching them get awarded a gold sticker.
At the Boston ANA, I found a 1916-D 10c in PCGS OGH G-4 and fell in love with it. I showed it to a few dealers. I especially liked Laura's comment when she looked at it as she called it a "Gem Good"

Ok, it is sort of an ego trip but more importantly a mental exercise of trying to pick the best of the best and limit your spending that way.

I had a hot streak going when I cherrypicked 100% of my purchases into gold stickers over a 6 month period!!! Never mind that it was only 2 for 2!!! I felt like a Superbowl champ!!!! LOL. >>



If you don't mind oreville, can we see a pic of the '16-D? Eventually I'd like to pick one up in that grade and have my set complete again -- had to sell mine earlier this year. Thanks!

Someone is gambling on a 67FB on a resubmission

Personally, I've seen coins in MS60 holders (gold) with CAC stickers selling for MS63 prices. Now maybe gold sticker coins are under graded but not by 2-3 points.

By the coin, not the slab and certainly not any kind of sticker.

I recently bought a couple coins in ANACS and NGC holders that you ask yourself, "why are these coins in this holder?" Paid low prices, got a very nice coin! I think the PCGS craze has created a tremendous opportunity to buy nice coins at cheap prices (in non-PCGS holders) and then submit to PCGS for grading.

The key is one has to know how to grade to know whether or not the coin (in any holder) is average, nice for the grade, high end for the grade, or under graded… >>

I agree with mercurydimeguy, buy the coin not the holder and yes it is an excellent time to pick up coins in other holders for a discount.

Howevever, I think something that gets missed a lot is that the stickering Co. is NOT a grading company. JA is telling the market what coins he will buy sight unseen and how nice he thinks they are. However, since the true nature of his business is in buying and selling these coins, he does have to be cautious about giving gold stickers to coins he thinks will upgrade (there's always the chance they won't, etc.). For instance, many of us here know that some gold coins have to be 1.5-2 points undergraded according to JA to get a gold sticker. As for MDG's assertion that gold stickered coins are not undergraded by 2-3 points, I have seen an NGC 40 (maybe 45) GREEN stickered coin get into a PCGS AU 53 without anything being done to the coin. This can happen because the stickering company is NOT a grading company. That's just the level he would buy the coin at.
