A few years back I sold my basic set - but they have always remained my absolute favorite type. So I started anew:

Wow. Those are some amazing pieces. Fast becoming my favorite coin design, but unfortunately now and likely far into my future unobtainable. So I guess I'll just enjoy yours from here.image

    A most lovely trio.

Lots of die polish on the first one, and Liberty's head is weaker than the other two. Don't recall the details, but isn't there some thinking the name below base variety was done much later?

I think if I were to own a single coin, this design and denomination would be it.

    Oh, my aching eyes.

    image

When I read the title of this thread, I thought somebody was collecting Gobrecht designs in general, and was going to quip, "Now all you need is a Gobrecht dollar or two".

Little did I know that the author of this thread was TDN, who actually can collect sets of Gobrecht dollars.

Thanks for letting us vicariously enjoy those.

I've always liked the "starry" reverse designs. And "starless" obverses, too, of course. We mortals can at least enjoy those on dimes and half dimes.

Funny, until I looked at these closeup pictures, I never noticed the little pellets/circles separating top and bottom legends on the reverse.

Very very nice. Lots of fun to go "on the hunt" again. You can have LOTS of coins, Great coins.....but without the activity and thrill of the hunt....well you know.

One of the greatest U.S. coin designs, with the starless obverse and the starred reverse. I guess it was just too avant garde for the Mint establishment, which was used to 13 stars on the obverse.

Laura finds them for me - with the exception of the last one which I stumbled into myself as part of the "Deal of the Century".

Those are beautiful. Mine aren't quite that nice.
  • Gorgeous coins.

I do have a question: Are the reverses rotated as shown?

True Views are often not correct on reverse alignment for Gobrechts so you cannot count on them
