If there is no winner tomorrow night, it could well top a billion dollars. When they first changed the game to it's current format, I predicted that it would eventually produce jackpots exceeding $1 billion.
<< <i>I live in east Ga and a guy in my county won the MM several years ago, the second biggest jackpot at the time ($276 Million). He took the cash payout and ended up with $100M cash after taxes. Bought a $7M 1900 acre plantation on the river, built a huge house (>$2M, which is beyond HUMONGOUS for my part of the world), bought a house on a popular barrier island on the Ga coast, gave each of his children $1M each and built them a $1M+ house on the plantation also, bought everyone in his family multiple brand new decked out vehicles (Corvettes, Mustangs, jacked up 4X4's), ATVs, and motorcycles, bought a firetruck to keep on his plantation, gave his grandchildren money to start businesses, threw outragous partys at his house featuring headlining country music stars (some of which was >$300K for a few hours of playing), and numerous other extravagances......
He is now divorced and remarried, moved to another city in a neighboring county, and only has about $2M to his name (some in cash and some in assets) which will probably last him until he departs from this earth. His relationship with his kids and grandkids is about null due to the uglyness of the divorce and fights over $$$.
He lived in a doublewide trailer when he hit the MM and worked as a Union welder living paycheck to paycheck.

Absolutely.
Not surprisingly, when what happens to winners has been looked into (Google the topic) what's found is what one would predict: If one was broke and not used to managing a budget one will end up broke again. If one is used to managing a budget - even a modest one, they tend to do well and it's a real blessing. As we've seen time and time again, one can spend any amount of money, make poor decisions and go broke quickly.
Used to, the 30 year payout annunity didn't look so good with the smaller jackpots. But a jackpot of $1Billion, $33 million a year for 30 years instead of a one-time payout of about half the jackpot looks pretty good. Of course, $500 million after taxes would be fun to do a Scrooge McDuck nosedive in......

At my age, I likely wouldn't live long enough to collect the last payment and if I did, WTF would a 95 YO invalid do with $33 million? It used to be that it was spread out over 20 years, but lower interest rates kinda forced them to pay it out over a longer time. Also the set aside/lump sum option used to be about half of the jackpot. Now it's up around 55%, but it's been over 60% in the past.
One big issue is how many accounts would one need to safely salt away that much money or would a big place like Fidelity be adequate. I'd think one would want to diversify.
Another thing is I think it would be kinda cool to have a million $$ in CASH.

Good question. In California 2 of the 3 big banks I dealt with failed. If you have no kids, or just one, how many different banks do you have open Totten Trust (payable on death) accounts at to have FDIC insurance for 100 mil?

You folks have just surmised the beauty of the large lotto drawings. For a $5 bill we get to dream about how we will divvy up the loot, which friends and relatives will get what, and where to stash the windfall. I give a lot less thought on how I will recover from getting hit by lightening or having a meteor smash into my head.

Without looking it up, if one had a conventional account FDIC insured to $250K, then one would need 400 such accounts to adequately cover it all. At $100K FDIC insured, one would nee 1,000 accounts. They could all be at the same bank if one was trusting enough.
Just goes to show how much there is to think about when the stakes get that high.
As far as divvying it up goes, the best thing is to make any loot sharers a winner of X amount of the jackpot and your only concern then would be the beneficiary of your estate one you meet your maker.
Husband and wife joint account good for 500k FDIC. H and W each separate accounts another 500k. H and W trust accounts for each other is another 500k. So 1.5 mil FDIC per bank. So you need to open 5 accounts at 66 different banks.

Don't mind losing and hope that someone hits so that I won't have to buy more tickets.
Having said that, I would pay a bit extra if we didn't have to hear about the truck driver in Iowa whose wife has Fibromyalgia and now with the $550 Million he can get off the road and take care of her.
Once, when the Mega was something like $360 Mill I went for $300 in tickets. Had a $10,000 payday out of that one.
A few years back , when the Powerball was up to about $650 Mill , I went nuts and put $1,000 into it. I hit for a bunch of crumbs on that one, maybe $80 total.
On this draw, I'm $100 into it. I actually got my fingers crossed that the thing rolls over. I seriously would like to see it make a run for $1 Billion. That would be so cool !
Of course if by some miracle I could hit this pot I wouldnt be dissapointed at all. Sooner or later its going to roll to a $Billion. These odds are simply stacked in favor of the game.

I picked number 7…. but none of the other numbers came with it. This is why it's over a half billion dollars , with odds of 259 million to 1. To think I could have purchased a presidential dollar for $1.40 plus S/H, and gotten $.89 at a Coin Star machine for it, seems like a better deal.
I never bought a lottery ticket until I was 40 y.o. Since then, and for the past 15 years, I have purchased them sporadically. I bought 5 yesterday and, consistent with my previous purchases, I failed to get even 1 number.
<< <i>I was thinking of buying one at Art's Mobil, then saw the line and the desperate looks on the faces of those waiting in line. It looks like there is a way to buy lottery tickets online, not sure why this isn't more popular. >>
Fortunately (or unfortunately), I have a small convenience store nearby that is never ever busy. The one clerk is often outside having a smoke when I arrive.
Coin related, I did hit the Megaball number and will ask for my payout in 10 dimes.
I got 3 numbers and the powerball number 7 for $50 from a quickpick. You would think it would be more. Probably ahead about $30 since I spent about $20 on the last three drawings combined. So close.

Will be about the same as 2 half billion jackpots I'd guess, and also how the winner/s take the payout.
Hence, have the shortest life spans with the greatest self-induced suffering.
