Anyone deal with Covina Coin?

raycycaraycyca Posts: 1,677 ✭✭✭
I have dealt with them a couple times. Fair service and they paid as advertised. I sent them 2 rolls of silver dollars, Peace and Morgan. 60% were BU, 20% AU. They paid me the very LOWEST amount for each coin, as if they were VG. To make matters worse, they took a month to pay for the coins. I called them after 3 weeks and asked what's up. They statetd that their ad stated it could take a month to pay. NOT in their ad. I told them I wanted my coins back. They stated the check would be in the mail in a few days, they couldn't give the coins back.

When the check finally arrived, I called and told them I wanted my coins back since they didn't pay as advertised. They stated they had no proof of the coins conditions. They stated they wouldn't do anything about it. The man on the phone was very irritable and unfriendly. PLEASE BE AWARE!!!! image(((((((((((((((((((((((image

The search function would have saved you some aggravation, time and money.

    Sorry this happened to you.

They sound ethically challenged. Thanks for the warning.

Whenever considering to do business with a dealer for the first time (buy or sell), do a forum search. Odds are he's been discussed before, especially if there were problems.

I wonder if anyone has made them aware of all the free publicity that they are getting from this thread.image

File a grievance with the ANA. From the info in the first of the old threads listed below, sounds like at least one of the guys there is a member-dealer.

For that type of selling, I would recommend Arizona Coin and Jewelry, also a heavy advertiser in the buy section. I have had nothing but great transactions with David McHenry. His checks are fair, fast and always good. Although I deal with him mostly in person, he is the real thing. I have no problem putting my thumbs up image

Covina made me nervous just calling them once, they never got the chance to screw me.

I was aware of Lenhart's dubious reputation, but thought I would be safe in selling them a group of modern mint sets.

Their published buy price for 1977 sets was $5 when I mailed my box 11/08. They rec'd. 11/14.

Between then and now, they lowered their buy price to $3.50 which is BELOW FACE VALUE.

They sent a note with my check:"Occasionally this will happen as mkt changes. Thanks for understanding."

Oh yeah, I understand just fine... I paid the postage to give my coins to them for less than I could have spent them for. Real nice outfit. Can't imagine they get many repeat customers. image

Yes, I know, I was forewarned.

My experience is a little different. Have been selling them bulk lots of post-cherry picked Buffalos for years without any real problems. They do take longer to pay than others, but I've found if I ship in the second half of the month, payment is faster.

I went into their store a couple years ago when junk silver was trading at around 15 time face. They quoted me a buy price if about half that. Haven't been back since.

You can cherry pick the store, they have a wide variety of material. His health fluctuates as does his temperment but his wife is a real sweety.

Thats what they say Mark, But some one said look out for his CK's they have a bite. I guess for buying or picking it's ok but selling stay away. image

I've dealt with Covina for at least 10yrs. Always with son-in-law Dave. Always in person. Never a problem. Always with bulk stuff.

Establish a relationship, give them real business & I doubt you'll have problems.
    Have a nice day

Looks like this outfit merits a fine Google review. image

I agree, have done so for years........but I thought he was the son?
Doesn't really matter though, he is a great guy to deal with.

Ive emailed scans of coins I was wishing to sell, ones that they had on their coin world buy list, they offered about half of what their ad stated, I didn't go any further than that, I sent it all to empire in AZ, check was fair and quick
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
