The Morgan Dollar - A Great Story

First and foremost, here's the dollar.


So why is it cut? Here's why.
This 1896 Morgan belonged to my wife's grandfather, Chalmer Detwiler. The story is about 4 childhood friends that went off to war and made a pact.
Chalmer, his nephews Elvin and Bob, and their friend Jack were inseparable. That was until World War II separated them. Bob was drafted first, then Chalmer, followed by Elvin them Jack. Before they left, Chalmer took the dollar and had it cut into four pieces. Each young man took one, promising that when the war was over, they would reunite the pieces and drink a toast.
On a night in 1946, the men met, reunited the pieces and drank a toast to their safe return.
As time passed, each man kept his quarter as a reminder of their friendship.
Fast forward to 1987. Jack was battling cancer and passed away. Bob died in 1993. In 2003, Bobs wife gave his piece to Chalmer. Elvin died in 1988. Many years later, Elvin's son found the piece and gave it to Chalmer. Once again, the four pieces were permanently reunited. Chalmer kept his treasure close by until his own death in 2007. The dollar is now in possession of his daughter.
