Newp: 1795 Lettered Edge

This is a VG8 in an OGH. I bought it one of of those Heritage make an offer to the current owner things. The pics were not great on Heritage, and today it came in and I am immediately bothered by what appears to be a dent or something on libertys mouth. Is that what this is?

  • With worn out 220 year old copper, you kind of get what you get and most pieces are net graded to start with. If you want to buy one they are more important than most series to view in hand to see if it is net graded and if you can live with it. That said it doesn't look too bad which is a good thing as I am pretty sure you are stuck with it.

I'd rather see it netted to Good but VG08 is not out of the question. I imagine it's planchet flaw near the mouth and not a dent. What does the reverse look like?

Here it is on Heritage. I am definitely stuck with it. Its just a big distraction, your eyes are drawn to it. Its right on her mouth... oh well. Tuition is expensive...

Ouch! The mark by the mouth doesn't look that bad in the images. Don't beat yourself up. Most of us have done worse and been able to use it as a learning experience Heck, posting the Heritage link was manning up right off the bat.

Maybe this is the elusive "gagged liberty" variety! image

I was thinking "No teeth" variety image

Seriously though, I think it's a nice coin, only wish I could see the lettering on the edge.

What is the process of resubmitting to PCGS to get a reholder and if it downgrades??

It's all about what the people want...

I am sending it in for a reholder and truview. There is no chance of it downgrading in that process.

I don't think it's so bad for a VG-8, but sometimes flaws are more conspicuous in hand.

Also bought this 1796 raw (which I rarely do) going to submit and hopefully it grades. I am guessing VG10-F12
