  So this begs the question do the major auction houses use your max bid against you? I have my doubts.

  From what I can gather, your max bid is private on eBay...but I never understood why people use a max bid to begin with. If you cannot do it yourself then find someone who can bid your max 3 seconds before the auctions end. This way, the under bidder won't have time to counter-punch.

  Couldn't a seller create a second account and then make an extremely high maximum bid on his own auction to determine the maximum bid of the highest other bidder on his auction and then withdraw his bid?

  On eBay it makes sense to be a low ball bidder.

  Bid is hidden. But as Perryhall points out, there are always ways around the system.

  Sure could but the the super sleuths on here would uncover the crime rather quickly..................

  The seller can always place a monster shill bid which will then give away your max bid. Then the seller withdraws the shill so that only he knows what you're max bid was. In the old days of eBay (before 2000), this happened frequently. Yet another reason to snipe.

  a seller could use that tactic but is shows that a bid was canceled if that ever happens to me I ask for my bids to be canceled just like the previous high bidder.
