The Coin Most Commonly Found in A Genuine Holder is ....

I see more 1934-S Peace $ in genuine holders than any other coin. Probably has a lot to do with what I am looking at. Also because it is somewhat of a conditional rarity - common in low grade hard to find in high grade. What are your thoughts? What coins do you see a lot of in genuine holders?

Great question. Any coin that has value in even damaged condition would be a candidate. What about the 1796 or 1796 half dollar or the 1799 cent?

There are a lot of 99's in graded holders that would be genny if almost any other date.

1893-S Morgans... but not as many as should be in Genuine holders.
    When in doubt, don't.

I have to answer with a general group.......toned copper IHC's and Lincoln Cents.
You are really taking your chances sending in a colorful piece of copper to PCGS.

Early Mint coins are often forgiven for problems much later ones suffer. My guess would be early 20th century silver or copper, for color or cleaning reasons. No idea on any single denomination or year.

I am thinking there are more Genuine "cleaned" Cents, specifically Lincoln's. JMHO.

I have seen a lot of early copper in genuine slabs. Mostly due to corrosion. I see a lot of cleaned early commems, too.

I would think it depends on the parameters. % coins extant VS. number in gennie holders OR sheer numbers of coins in gennie holders.

I think the 1893-S Morgan probably has a decent quantity, but the 1793 capped cent probably has a much higher percentage.

$3 gold - most are ex-jewelry or cleaned.

Early copper...surface corrosion or post mint damage image

I was thinking absolute number not percentage. I am sure some of the early dates have a large percentage, but the 1934 S Peace dollar had over a million minted and a much better survival rate and probably a lot more of them in absolute number in genuine holders.

Agree with lots of folks mentioning key date coins that are often counterfeited and the "genuine" adds value, or coins which are scarce in high grade that have been commonly been cleaned over the years in search of higher grades (prices), or small early coins that tend to have damage, or early gold and silver coins with "test marks" like digs and scratches. Also lots of common coins with fake but pretty toning, that maybe tend to get cracked out to "try again" or because people don't care if it's fake as long as it's in the matching plastic

I see a lot of Trade dollars in GEN holders.

And perhaps not coincidently, very few with green CAC beans.

1793 or 1794 Large Cents would be at or near the top of that list. image
