My first (uneducated) instinct is that it's from the Middle East...or Near East.
  • This Link might help.

The side of the coin (on the right) reminds me of the Keystone State symbol of Pennsylvania.

I agree that it's likely a Masonic medal or chapter penny. I do not have a copy of King to look it up. The earlier works by Wright are mostly lists with only a few pictures.

  • It is a masonic token most likely bronze or even brass . The lettering with the dots is considered part of the angelic alphabet from what I read and have been told by a Mason friend. dont know if that helps.

  • It's a Masonic chapter membership token. The design imitates a Jewish shekel of Simon Maccabaeus?

The keystone is a familiar Masonic symbol, of course. H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S. is said to be the mark of the order's ancient Grand Master and to stand for, "Hiram The Widow's Son Sent To King Solomon."

The small space in the center of the circle is reserved for the member's own mark: initial(s), number, or some other personal symbol.
Also not on this token but the representation is "They received every man a penny", This is also similar to the Paleo-Hebrew/Samaritan alphabet.
