I am finished bidding after a tricky auction (for me) given the sequence of items offered and overall budget allocated. Overall, quite pleased with the Hungarian pieces below which are tougher to find nice and problem free. Interestingly, I could not compete on the prior Stacks auction and even Goldbergs while here prices were reflective of market or for the Hungarian Taler, what I consider a steal.
My sentiment again is that the number of Heritage lots and sessions dilute bidding levels, while more selective auctions offering fewer pieces ended up selling at even more than double the price. As an example, the Hungarian Taler sold for double the price on Stacks.

Thanks Bronzemat. I don't either. This one in hand (saw it in NYC's Heritage office) has lots of luster uncommon for the type. Not sure why they are not common in higher grades - perhaps the large size Talers were stored away and not as heavily circulated.

On a related note, what do you think might be a good "one off" piece just to have a Hungarian/Austrian Thaler in my collection? More common would probably suit my budget better, if at all. I know nothing about these, so I might as well ask the master for some guidance. Also, what would be a good book to read to get my bearings on these? Thanks Zohar, for the education and great show as usual.
1) Davenport Series - LINK. The volumes are broken by century, with a set for European crowns and another for German Talers.
2) Standard Price Guide to World Crowns & Talers 1484-1968 1984 ed. - summarizes all the Davenport catalogs. Fewer images and detail, but a good reference. LINK
3) More detailed die level - Voglhuber, Moser Tursky. Not worth the investment at this stage.
Prices vary based on quality. Higher grades go north of $1,000 at times, multiples. Lower grade (VF-XF), a couple of hundred. Keep an eye on ebay. My view, especially if buying one piece, try to get the best you can afford.

That 1701 hogmouth taler was one I was watching myself, it is simply a beauty.
Ultimately though I focused my limited attention on a couple of other pieces that were more in line with what I already have started in my collection.
Your ever growing collection never fails to amaze me. Sometimes when I see your posts I think to myself..."when I finally get my collecting act together I want to collect like Zohar".

Realizing that it's not worth purchasing XF-AU grades with the intention to upgrade them later, is a sure sign of collecting maturity and it also saves you money overall. Wonderful pick ups.
