Question for Coin Dealers about inventory tracking

I am sorry if this is a little off topic but I have a B&M storefront and I was wondering if it would be feasible to utilize a bar code tracking program to track the in and out of coins coming into my store or would the quick turn around that happens often in the coin world cause to many problems to keep things updated.

Thanks
RACC
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

  • It depends, how much time do you want to spend adding inventory tracking lables to coins?

I am an Accountant and use to help set up point of sale (POS) software on location for companies.

A barcode tracking setup that coins (in holders) can be applied would be time consuming in the beginning, but would simplify inventory counts. Also these can be tied to your POS cash register.

You would need a POS cash register, scanner, and bar code labels.

You do not need a label maker if you can create sheets of labels using a laser printer.

I am not a dealer but I bought a cheap USB bar code scanner to read certified coin label bar codes into Heritage "My Collection" inventory system. That works, occasionally Heritage wont recognize a coin number. I would guess that if I wanted to fool around getting it working I could even use a smartphone barcode reader.

just keep an excel spread sheet for your graded coins. I use the last five digits of the cert number for tracking. A dash or no dash tells me which of the two major TPGs graded the coin.

First time I saw barcodes on coins was when I worked at Heritage circa 1990. It's a great way to keep track.

Seems like it would very time consuming (+ monetary) from the start and unless you turn out 100's or 1000's of coins per day, it may not me beneficial.

A free Excel spreadsheet might be the way to go and can be carried with you to shows/home/etc.
